Has anybody built a Great Planes 40 sized P-51 with a clipped wing as a semi-scale Reno racer? Say, clipping one bay off each wing to give it the stubby look and a bit more straight line speed? How did it land? Was it a lead sled?

Just pondering another kit to buy and ways to bash it...

I built one..but I was too afraid to to clip it because I put retracts in it.lol
I think it has the ultra sport's wing design.

I think its always better to add a little more engine then to clip the wings.

I am really more interested in the racer look than speed. The GP P-51 is too draggy and has a fat airfoil, both of which limit it's all-out speed potential. I was just wondering if it turns into a monster with the shorter wing, since all the builds I can find seem to come in right around 6lb with retracts. I tend to build pretty light, but it still is not going to be a lightweight no matter what I do with it, especially with retracts.

How does yours land, Jeff? Think it would be terrible with one bay off each wing panel?

I built one for war bird racing at the club I belonged to. I put a Fitzpatrick 61 in it and due to the rules I had to stretch the wing 4 inches. I also fully sheeted the wing. Plane flew great with no bad habits. The only thing it didn't like was meeting a Sweet Stick head on. I will build another. Go for it.

I built mine pretty much stock with retracts but put a Supertigre 61 with pitts muffler on it.
Flies great but lands a bit fast.

I know this is old but I built this plane, it would be an excellent choice for racing. A few minor modes. starcop

Our club and another club nearby held a pylon racing series last summer where everybody had to start with the same kit which was the Great Planes P-51. I made minimal changes to mine in the canopy area to make it look a little racier. It has a Thunder Tiger Pro .46 in it with a Pitts muffler and it is one of the fastest and nicest flying planes I own.

Hi All, Nice looking Mustang racer Danh4. You did a nice job all the way around. I've completed mine in the old fashioned p-51D covering, still haven't maiden flight yet. So you say they fly good, a bit fast on the landing? That sounds great, just how I usually fly. I tend to keep 1/3-1/4 throttle and cut when my wheels touch. Seems to keep minimal pressure on the landing gear. I have another mustang I've been flying for 2 years now, so it probably won't be very far off when I fly my GP Mustang. starcop

Thanks, so did you Starcop! Your Mustang is beautiful, what are you going to power it with? After I built and flew mine, I wanted to build another one as a warbird just because it is such a nice flyer, haven't gotten around to it yet but I will. I don't think mine needs to land fast at all, could be the earlier poster's did because his weight was up with the .61 up front. The only trouble mine gives me is an occasional nose over when the grass is a little long, keep your gear as far forward as possible. By the way, what did you use for the chrome covering on yours? It looks very sharp, was it a pain to work with?

Hi Danh4, I've installed the O.S .46 Max; I always had such good luck with O.S motors I wouldn't change if it were free. They always run great, never quit and have excellent power; provided they are broke in correctly. Also I used the Chrome Ultra Kote by Hangar 9, it was 13.50 per roll, took me 2 of them to complete the wings, fusalage and extra's. This was the first model I've built in 15 years so I just had to take my time; I also read a book from the hobby store on mono-kote. The Chrome can be tricky to use, it will show every little indent, glue or anything underneath. Also it wrinkles very easy. But for the most part, if I can do it as a first timer, anyone can do it. I'll get better as I go along. I just ordered the Top Flight Gold Edition Corsair .60, I can't wait! starcop

Dan,

That is pretty much what I was thinking of. Very nice work, looks great!

Is the wing stock? Retracts? More Pics?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks! Here's a couple more pics for you. I built my wing stock and did not use retracts because those were the rules of the racing series we came up with.

Starcop,

I agree with you about O.S., I've always had good luck with all that I've owned. Same with the Thunder Tiger Pro .46s though, I have 3 of them and they all run great.

I'll have to try that Chrome Ultracote, I wonder if it is easy or hard to see in the air?
