Sorry to hear about this.
I found the story online already: http://www.examiner.com/a-1401949~Police__Man_drowned_retrieving_toy_boat.html
http://www.wavy.com/global/story.asp?s=8356517

We can't stress enough that you should use a safe way of retrieving your boats and not swim after one, especially in cold water.

Of course the news has to refer to it as a "TOY" boat, trivializing the whole story... truly sad.
RIP Mr. Perez

Don't worry about that even though I do agree with you. The media couldn't get a story right if it happened to them.
First reports that he was in his early twenties when he was 31. Then they said that he was a non-swimmer when in fact, he could. With water conditions the way they were, being a swimmer or non-swimmer is really a non-issue.
If we've learned anything at all from this incident is to think before doing something like this. The sanctioning bodies rules are there for a good reason and are worth following even if you're not at a race.
Two years ago in Puerto Rico a child was swimming in a river when a boater lost control and the boat impaled the boy in the chest, killing him. A man in Hialeah, FL drowned while trying to get his dead boat back rowing an inflatable when others were still running. That non-swimmer drowned in front of his family when one boat hit the inflatable puncturing it.
Make this man's loss of life mean something to you. Be careful out there, have fun and come home safely.

Harry they do the same thing with RC airplanes. Toy airplane. But Ron is right. We are lucky at Hansen Damn to have the life guards who are happy to go retrieve for you. If not. Kiss it good bye and your family when you get home. There's always another boat.

I hope that he's at that big lake in the sky having the best time. I truly do.

It is always sad to hear when someone loses their life doing what they enjoy. How many times do we knowingly use a tool incorrectly while building and/or repairing, just to get it done quickly? Then find our selfs rushing for a first aid kit, because we've poked or sliced our hand. It only take one mistake we can't get out of. My condolences go out to his family, friends and this community for loosing a fellow boater.

Safe Boating To You All,

If I never hear of another model boat related drowning it will be too soon.

Unfortunately this hobby sees 2-3 boaters die each and every year trying to retrieve something they love. (there was one earlier this year already)

Keep stories like this in mind whenever you help someone into the hobby. Let the tragidy of this poor guys death keep others from paying the ultimate price. Safety must come first.

If you dont have a safe means of recovery - you are not ready to run your boat.
