Hey guys, another great morning of flying. I flew my Yak54 and only had time to fly my 500E for one battery. I flew a guys airplane and the left wheel locked causing the plane to go to the left and plowed the tall stuff. It broke. By the way, I always start a test fly of folks aircraft with a hearty " I am not resposible for any mishaps" Ask Matty!!

Another was a Gaui425 that rolled over on take off. I hit TH so no damage. Post flight showed a seperated link on the head. Another one was a Blade 400 clone/ Blade450 with Beastx flybarless system. Went into a hard left Piro. Luckely the Beastx kept it nice a straight. I hit Throttle hold and got it down in one piece. It had a tail slider link seperation on one blade.

I had my 600 and Vibe but did not get to fire them up. I ended up flying everybody elses stuff. I don't mind at all. I am always ready to help....... as long as it is understood that I fly on your dime

Sean, Yep that X5 has my eyes too but I already have a 600. The new Jr 550 is supose to be a super combo FBL.. About $1200 or so,,, I think. I think I am going to snag a 300x. I fly the store 130x so no need to spend the money on that. I really have a blast with it.

Thumb I store my batteries at about 50% and never like to burn tham down less than 15-20%.I use my transmitter time on everything but My nitros.
Mack wassup?

Matty?

Jim

hey guys! yup! my turn to be absent from place of, hee hee!

glad to hear everyone is busy and good to hear from Karl!

i got out, finally, with my 600n at the local flight school/flying club and managed to squeeze myself in between the other guys, who all happened to have 700 size electric flybarless machines and a lot of mickey taking ensued, along the lines of "where did you find that dinosaur?", etc.! the other guys had Logos and Compass HV's and were whooping up the air doing some mega 'G' bank and yank turns and uppety downy stuff (to coin a friend of ours phrase)!!

i'm increasingly thinking i should have stuck with electric helis, even though i love the power, noise and smell of my nitro, as they are so much more convenient and, dare i say it, more socially acceptable these days!!

still trying to plan out my business idea of starting an aerial photography service, which is also making me think of getting a 700 size electric to mount a camera on!

unfortunately, it might mean i have to start trimming my herd out (ouch!)

work is going good, fixing the R.A.F. Seaking Mk3 SAR helicopters, only likely to last until the end of November, so continually looking for other jobs!!

we've currently got the 2012 Paralympics going on at the moment and to say these people put a lot of able bodied persons to shame is such an understatement!! the advertising campaign between the Olympics and these, simply said "Thanks for the warm-up!" , which pretty much says it all!!

anyway peeps, i must go and read to my daughter, which is a chore i'm more than happy to take on!

hope everyone is in fine fettle and are experiencing better weather than we're getting (it was about -2 deg C on my ride into work this morning at 0430hrs!!)

and remember, if it hurts when you lift your arm above your head - don't do it!!

Hey Hey hey!!! Man if they think your 600 is a dinosaur they would really like my Hirobo Evo. Yeah I know we used to fly them back during the turn of the century but.. The my Vibe is the only thing that fly's as good. Both will fly circles around my Trex600esp. You know, I have had some good flying lately and I am having a super time getting out of that darn store and get some sunshine. Wow yet another load of new helicopters from the JR550 to the tiny full 3d nano from blade. The new trex800 and the Trex new herd of pro DFC birds... It is hard to choice with all that is out there. All I can say is wait a little before you jump and something will change your eye. Wow 700's are the norm at my field.. 900's or 1100's not far away?

Later,

Jim

Hey Andy!

any chance of a free overseas subscription, for me to, ahem, "promote" the fine publication over here??

didn't get the helis out this weekend but did go kite flying with the family on top of a large hill near us called "Cley Hill", which was once an Iron Age fort amongst other things!!

have stripped the Apache down again to fix the fuse and put in the new motor, in the never ending attempt to get it just how i want it! i have found out why the landing gear was splayed out; the banjo union joining the two parts of the struts together was bent and typically snapped as i tried to coerce the small ally part back to the correct position! have ordered two new sets but unfortunately they have to come from Hong Kong!!

Sean, yes, i've been watching the Goblin since it was launched but am fancying maybe a Logo or Compass!!

peeps, i have to go and take a trip to dreamsville as i'm on earlies this week (0400hrs alarm!! )

be good and if someone shouts "duck!", don't turn round and ask "where?"

I am back. I think. My daughter fell ill. Very ill. Spent 11 days in hospital with high fever and nobody knowing what was wrong with her. They tested her for everything (we have West Nile cases in our county this year). Ended up she has lupus. As soon as they treated her for it she perked right up! She's on the mend now so things are much much better. Will be a while before she gets back to work. She is resting comfortably at home quietly going crazy. She would much rather be at work than on disability!

Got back to flying last weekend and I do have to write a new Rat Club Chronicle for y'all, but not today. I can report that one of our members, Quentin, has a Goblin 700 and a brand new Mikado Logo 800. It's gigantic. I will post a couple pictures next time I get here.

Glad to see everyone out there having fun.

Mack

Mack sorry for the sickness in your family. Glad everything is on the mend. Samo samo here. The weather is cooling off with some fantastic days for flying. But I have had a lot of store hours due to vacations and covering for folks.

I broke down and purchased a new heli. It arrived yesterday. I have not had a chance to crack the seal on the box. I got one of the new Trex250Pro DFC helicopters. Having a day off today, i did just that... Took the day off from everything.

Later,

Jim

I have received 2 consecutive new Double Horse 9117 helicopters that would not bind.  These are brand new "in the box."   I finnally got one that works but has a major pronlem with the MOPS system that cuts the power for no apparent reason (falling 20 feet in the air).   Very frustrating.  I also ordered a replacement control board (after crash) for a Double Horse 9116 that will not bind.  The red light on the board flashes quickly then slowly as if you have'nt turned on the transmitter.  This is a great helicopter that worked fine until damage to the board.  I ordered another board from RCRonanoke.com and expect it in a few days.

I really like the Double Horse helicopters but am starting to get leary about thier quality control.  I have 3 helicopters, recently purchased that I cannot fly.

Any thoughts?

Heya everyone, sorry I haven't been around in so long. Back in early July I had some really serious family issues come up and got pretty distracted from flying, I've been working my way back into it lately though since I don't want all the time and effort I've put in so far to be wasted. I made it out to our clubs funfly last weekend with my Typhoon 2 and last night took my crack yak and trex500 over to the club presidents house to work on them for a bit and get them ready to fly again. I need to sink some solid time into my sim before I'll be totally comfortable taking the heli out again, we'll see if I end up having enough free time before indoor season hits and I have to buy a 130 haha.

While I was over there last night he actually offered me a pretty great deal...a Raptor 50 receiver ready with spare parts and everything I'd need to get going with a nitro setup for $250. My only real outdoor heli at the moment is still my trex500, I retired the Blade400 I learned on because I don't want to see anything bad happen to it and...well it just doesn't fly all that well. I have no experience with nitro whatsoever so it would be a learning experience...I wasn't really in the market at all, especially for a Raptor, but it is a size up from my trex and I can't ignore the price. He did offer to let me fly it sometime to see what I think, so I'll certainly wait at least that long before making any sort of decision.

If you remember I was very seriously considering a Logo 600SX last time I was around, but after some time away from the hobby I started considering the possibility of buying an old 240SX to build into a track car or drifter and...well I could conceivably pick up a decent 240 for the same price as the Logo, so I'm not sure at this point. Getting into some form of auto racing has been a life goal for as long as I can remember and it may be time to stop putting it off.

My other thought was that I'd really like to add a nice balsa 3D plank to my fleet, since I don't have a great flying outdoor plane. I'd been thinking at the very least a 50" and had been leaning toward the 3Dhobbyshop Edge 540. The guy with the Raptor also offered to cut me a bit of a deal on a half built Edge540 he has, I forget the company but it's apparently right in line with 3DHS from what I heard. I feel like having a really great 3D plane may be a bit more bang for my buck at the moment than having a slightly better performing 3D heli. One way or another I'd definitely like to have at least one new model before next spring.

Texpert, I really don't have a cure for you other than you may not be binding the helicopters properly. On Spectrum receivers you must remove the binding plug before powering down the unit after binding or it will not take.

Skunk, Glad your back. The raptor sounds ok just remember that it is very old technology but well worth $250m as long as your are up to speed on nitro motors and how to tune them. Half built airplanes have never worked out for me.... way to much wrong with them and usually warped and or parts missing.

Yeah the mechanical mixing on the Raptor has always been kind of fascinating to me. Is it going to keep up with my 3D? I'm not doing crazy frantic crack routines or anything but I like a crisp response and reasonably quick flip/roll rate,.I know it won't have quite the snap and speed my trex500fbl has but maybe it'd make up for it with some nice float and tracking? I really do need to fly the thing myself before I can make a call. Are there any upgrades I'll want to do on it just to bring it up to date or does the old tech still fly fine? As for Nitro I have absolutely no experience with them but just about everyone else in our club does, it would be a learning experience but the resources are there.

Regarding the plane, I laid hands on it and definitely trust the guy I'd be buying it from. I don't think I'd have any issues with it regarding build quality, my main concern is just that I think I'd rather go with a 3Dhobbyshop plane based on input from club members.

On another note I had been pretty set on the idea of getting a 130 for this indoor season since it was released, but now I'm hearing all sorts of good things about this Nano CP X. Apparently it's everything the mcpx should have been? And it's a lot cheaper than the 130...price and durability are definitely tempting for an indoor rig, but does it live up to the hype? If it's basically just an mcpx that is actually happy doing 3D then I'm pretty much sold haha.

Jim:

Where is the "binding plug" on the Double Horse helicopters?   These are advertised as "charge up and fly" type helicopters.  I received a replacement board for a 9117, installed it and it will not bind.  The same transmitter will bind with another 9117 I have so I don't think it is the transmitter.  This is really frustrating as the last "new" helicopters and replacement board, (4 out of 5) will not bind to the transmitter.  Either Double Horse is putting out a lot of junk or I am doing something wrong or I am the unluckiest SOB in the world to receive 4 out of 5 defective products.
I am more inclind to think Double Horse products are a rip off.

Let me know what you think.

You main gear is worn down allowing the torque tube to slip forward allowing the tail gear to come out. OR your tail boom has slipped backward. You really need to replace the main gear with the metal one in any case. The Nano is a real winner. I even bought one for myself. It gets better as the motor breaks in. Raptor can be converted to FBL remember!

I completed a Trex250 pro DFC kit. I have not flown it yet but it looks really good. The tail servo and FBL unit mount on a sliding tray between the frame sides and it is torque tube driven. The only problem was that there is little room to stuff everything in. The forums suggest an external bec of example a Castle 10 amp bec. I moved the ESC to the left side of the frame and the bec to the right. I never like to put ESC's under the canopy. That allowed room to dress the cables up. I am using a 3gx unit and only one satellite. I ranged checked it and got 130 paces. I will report how it flies.

I do not know how to bind the Double horse. Usually the small helis simply have to be plugged into power and then you turn the transmitter on while holding the binding button. I suggest you call the folks who sold the helis to you and ask the proper way.

Take care

Jim

Jim, Do you know what part I would need to fix it? I think it may be...http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/rear-tail-gear-set-130x-BLH3736

I am thinking about the nano, I just think it may be too much like the mcpx!

Thanks, Sean
