I am still having trouble with my idle and transition, I will keep at it and get it figured out but we have had tornados here and I have not had much time to look into it. Truth is , Iowa is missing a few towns right now.

Jeffie, sorry to hear of all the trouble you're having with the idle and transition. An engine that only runs well at full throttle doesn't make a very good RC engine.

I wonder though if there's something inherently wrong with the carb as you're not the only one that's having this issue. I would like to think that the distributor (or even the manufacturer) would step up to the plate and help sort this out. I have one of the .46s here as well, but now I'm afraid to take it outta the box!

Don't worry Joe. With all the brain power at Aviastar and SIG we will get it figured out . Gotta go put my siding back on my house that the tornado ripped off.

Thought I would give an update on the Aviastar. I have been working on the idle problem with SIG and I believe the spray bar is at fault, apparently mine and 2fast's got past quality control but as we all know those things happen to the best of us. I remember a certain well known manufacturer some years ago with a similar problem that still gets brought up occasionally. But I will not allow this fine engine to be tainted by a few incorrect spray bars. Personally I think that since this engine is the same basic frame for 3 different sizes that the spray bar for a .53 or .65 size may have accidentally gotten into my carb. No problem, It will be replaced and this excellent engine will show its stuff not only on the top end (it already has! ) but at idle too. I shall endeavor to persevere. I still think that with its ball bearing crank and great super tough construction this engine is going to be one of my favorites!! From what I have heard this engine is a lower displacement version af a much larger (.60?) size engine to give it the strength to survive the beginner pilot (landings are still a problem for me ) and as a bonus it supports mongo horsepower. It is not a high rpm design, this bad boy was built for torque. Check out my readings for a 12" prop If you feel the need for speed with this engine you need to only prop large and lots of pitch in order to use the low rpm grunt of the power band.

Check it out, I managed to post a video. It isn't my video per se but it is the engine that I sent to my friend to check out. When he has time I am certain he will pipe up about it. He is a pretty busy guy.

Jeffie, it should be noted that this engine is still on it's first 12 oz. tank in the video so it's not set anywhere near peak RPM yet. Also, I didn't spend a whole lot of time on the low end, just enough for some quick idle tests. Oh, that's an APC 10 x 8 with 10% Nitro in the tank, and a Fox RC Long (idle bar) plug. I'll try to get a tach on it later in the week for some numbers.

This video shows the idle/transition a little better...

Looks as if someone has figured out a way to make this engine idle. Please tell us the secret to leaning the low end for a decent idle.

Well... the main needle is about 2 1/2 turns out and the idle mixture was turned in almost a whole turn from factory settings. Like I said, I didn't really spend a whole lot of time with it, so it could probably even be improved upon.

I always check the idle mixture with the "pinch test", e.g. pinch the fuel line at idle and see if it speeds up, gradually slows down, or dies right away. If it speeds up, the idle mixture is a bit rich, of it dies right away, it's lean, if it gradually slows to a stop, it's about right. This technique works on everything from a Norvel .049, all the way up to the big gassers... Of course with the two needle or airbleed RC carbs, you need to set the high speed needle fairly close to running position first...

Jeffie's no stranger to engines, so I'm certain he's tried everything under the sun to get a decent idle / transition. Maybe I just got lucky with a decent runner right out of the box? (I'll tell ya what, Jeffie ain't kiddin' - this is a powerhouse of a .46!) If it runs as good in the air as it does on the bench, I'll be very pleased.

It seems you are one of the lucky ones. I am well versed with the pinch test, been using it for about 40 years now. Some carbs are not able to lean the low end even with the low end needle all the way in. I happen to have one, I guess it needs to go back to Sig.

Try Justin, he is a Motorhead Guru at SIG. I bet the carb is the only problem and the spray bar is made for an engine a size or two too big. They stand behind their products. They have been good to me.

If it would stop raining I could get outside and do some testing. Iowa is mostly under water right now. And last nights tornados killed 4 kids. Rough week for the pig farmers. I am going to cut the cables on my house and let it float to a new address. Might end up in Loosiana. Heard the fishing was good there. I made the mstake of buying a fishing liscense this year, complete waste of money.

Jeffie, et al,

I finally got around to recording some numbers on various props - the numbers look good, and it'll happily swing a 12 x 6 APC with authority! Idle and transition were good and reliable - even for an engine with only (3) 12 oz. tanks through it. As expected the transition was brisk on the smaller props, but got more sluggish as the prop diameter increased. Also, the large props produced some extremely low idle speeds - like ~1600 RPM on the 12 X 6! For what it's worth, after the two hour testing session, the plug looked good as new and the engine still has a noticeable pinch at TDC. For the record, the engine is as it came out of the box...

The following numbers were taken today (80 degrees F, 30% RH and 29.61 in Hg) on 5% Morgan Omega fuel and a Hanger 9 sport plug (cheap idle bar plug).

9.5 x 6 MA
15,600 / 2800 RPM
88.64 MPH
HP 1.325
Thrust 5.68 lb

10 x 6 MA
14,250 / 2700 RPM
80.97 MPH
1.240 HP
Thrust 5.82 lb

10 x 8 MA
12,300 / 2200 RPM
93.18 MPH
1.063 HP
Thrust 4.33 lb

11 X 7.5 MA
11,300 / 2100 RPM
Speed 80.26
HP 1.132
Thrust 5.35 lb

12 X 6 APC
10,500 / 1700 RPM
59.66 MPH
1.029 HP
Thrust 6.94 lb

You can check out the Windows Media video of the 12 X 6 run here:

http://home.comcast.net/~jbwebst/AV4612x6.ASF (Yes, that's oil on the lens of the camera.)

I'll hopefully get around to posting videos of the other prop runs later in the week...

-Joe

You just wait till my new carb gets here. . The boys at SIG sent me a new carb and I am going to put it to good use showing you that mine is just as good as yourn. Man I like this engine. So tell me, how fast can I push my new trainer with this engine till it rips the wings off ? Mine has a lot more fuel through it and I think It actually makes a little more power on the top end because of it, but the compression still feels like new and it still has great pinch. When yours is sufficiently broken in try some SIG 15% nitro with 20% castor(I Know you ain't scared of castor), mine really likes it on the stock setup (though 10% seemed great too) . I was getting my best figures on low nitro by adjusting the head shims. To me that is like selecting the right
