Glenn,

I haven't had much problems with the wind pushing the helicopter down. All I get is a shaking motion in a hover or going in to a banked turn twice the helicopter shot up a few feet. This reminded me when I was learning/ still learning to do autos I was in Idle up and went into full negative pitch without hitting the throttle hold quick enough, that sent the helicopter down pretty quick.

Nick,

Sounds like the T-Rex handles the wind a bit better than the B400 does. It also may have something to do with my flying environment. I am flying in between 2 story or so tall buildings on 3 sides. I think the buildings do funny things to the wind currents in the parking lot where I fly. I would probably be better off in an open field...at least the wind would be more consistent.

It was very wierd in the baseball field the other day. There was wind, but trees were blocking some of the wind. But, the wind was coming up behind me, from the area of the road, where there was not as much tree cover. It was really taking the B400 out with it. I was not prepared for a "backwind"...it was totally different from what I am used to. I may go out to that field again this weekend, I'll know more what to expect. The funny thing is, it didn't seem to bother the Quark much at all...go figure? Maybe it's smaller profile is the reason?

Have fun flying,

Glenn

Glenn,

I mostly fly in my backyard with very tall trees in two of the directions. Then the house behind me. So that might help out a little.

That is interesting that the Quark flies so good with the wind.

I am going through all my helicopter receipts and putting the totals in a spreadsheet and I had no idea I spent so much. But no one told me it was going to be addicting.

Nick,

I try not to think about how much I have spent on this hobby so far...lol

I had no idea that the little CX2 at the LHS would turn into this...

But, you know what? I'd do it all over again! But with some changes...I think I'd skip over the CPP's if I had it to do all over...

I can think of alot of worse ways to spend money!

Glenn,

I would do it again too. But if I had the same abilities to fly right now, before I would have skipped all the helicopters and went to a T-Rex or a bigger helicopter. I could have got 3 .50 sized nitros.

Nick,

You know, it's easy for me to say now that I would have skipped the CPP's, but I actually learned ALOT from them... I definately would have skipped the second CPP, that was a bad move on my part. I AM going to skip the CPP2, the only thing I want off of it is the DD tail setup to try out.

So, I can't say the CPP was a bad move. It was a good learning experience for sure, now that I look back on it.

I am a long ways away from a nitro, no plans for that any time soon!

Hope you get some flying in between the bad weather.

Glenn,

One good thing from the CX and CPP is that it got me on these forums. Without them I might not be here.

I was looking at some videos of larger helicopters and the space they needed to fly and I don't have that kind of space. It would be nice to fly in almost any wind condition, but I only have room up to a 500 size.

There was supposed to be thunderstorms today, but the weather is perfect. It is very calm with good temps. But I don't have much time to fly today.

Hope you get good weather and some flights in today.

Nick

Nick,

Very good point, we would probably not be having this conversation had I not had so much difficulty at first with some of the stuff on the CPP. I was really struggling when I bought the DX6i for it and was trying to figure the servos, pitch, throttle curves, etc. out.

Yeah, size does matter. And, with a nitro, you also have to worry about noise too. Some people really have an issue with noise, and will complain, even if it doesn't bother them that much.

The 400/450 size electrics are a very cool size, not too big, not too small.

The size of the Gaui 200 has me thinking as well...it's about the size of the Quark, and those little guys get pretty small, pretty quickly! I found that out last Sunday in the baseball field, with the Quark, it got a good ways out there, and I more or less lost orientation there for a second or two. With the speed of the Hurricane 200, it might get lost very quickly!

It was funny when I flew the B400 and the Quark back to back a couple of weeks ago. After flying the Quark, the B400 seems HUGE !!

Hope you get some flying in before the storms.

Glenn,

Yeah I can imagine that the Gaui 200 could easily get to far away from you. When I was at a local baseball field with the T-Rex it got a little to far from me and I had a hard time seeing it. And it was nose in, so there wasn't much of the helicopter to look at to find the orientation.

I just got through one pack. I forgot to turn the timer on, so the battery is way past the 80% mark. I have done that a few times and after a charge the pack is good as new. I have been having a hard time in the middle of a backwards figure 8 were it looks like an X, and it clicked for me today. Now there is a nice transition there. Then I came down backwards at a 90 degrees to the ground and when I pulled out of it I went into a fast left turn backwards. I have never done one before on my left side and I didn't plan on doing one. I almost went inverted without trying once. It is hard to explain what it looked like, but I was trying to turn around and pick up some speed. Well I had a very good time. I don't see any signs of a storm like the paper said it was going too. There is blue skys with no clouds. I am just going to try and enjoy it as much as possible.

Nick,

Sounds like you had a great day flying today! That 90 and then fast left sounds wild!

I got a little bit of flying in today. It was a bit windy, and I didn't want to fly the B400, the motor didn't come in today. So I flew my original CPP, and like one battery in the Quark. I did pretty well with both, the Quark was it's usual awesome self, although it didn't like the wind when it got up high very much. The CPP flew well, besides the usual whacky tail business.

Didn't get the motor, it will probably be here on Saturday, so I don't know what my plans are for tomorrow. I think the weather is supposed to be stormy or rainy, not sure what yet. I could snag the motor out of the spare B400, or just wait for the new motor to get here. Or, I could push my luck a little and fly it with the bad motor. I don't know, I'll know more tomorrow. I was so tired today, I took a nap after work, which I never do. I couldn't sleep well last night for some reason.

Hope you can get some more flying/fun in tomorrow!

Glenn,

When it is windy out I usually fly very close to the ground and that helps a lot. But there is very little room for error. It sounds like you had fun with the Quark. By the way you talk about it, how could you not have fun with it. Did JPEE ever get his Quark?

It never did storm here today. To bad I had to go to work and miss this great day. I have had a lot of days where I just crash after work and don't do anything I want to.

I have relatives coming tomorrow, so I don't know how much flying I will get in. But I can always sneek out and get some flights in.

Have a good 4th of July.

Nick

Nick,

Hey, poor JPEE is bummed, his Quark didn't make it today, looks like it'll be Monday for him. That's terrible, to miss a 3 day weekend with a new toy like that!! Oh well, at least he'll have something to look forward to on a Monday afternoon!

I hope you can sneak out and get some flying in.

I also hope you have a nice 4th of July holiday.

Talk to you soon,

Glenn

Glenn,

That is too bad he can't fly the Quark anytime soon. He should have a lot of fun. It is no fun waiting for helicopter stuff to be delievered.

Glenn,

I just looked at my battery I over discharged and it has 1900mAh put into it and it is a 2170mAh battery. And 1736mAh is the 80% discharged rating. I think I flew a little too long. LOL
