Hi all,

I am brand new to the site, so forgive my asking a silly question which probably has been asked in one form or another multiple times... There are so many kits out there, I am getting red eyes staring at my screen trying to find which ones are best...

I have the F-18 EDF kit from Hobby Lobby and will be using it as a learner plane... In the meantime, I am looking for a kit that I build up and do more work on, as well as of course having more power and performance.

Can you suggest kits (and links to them) that I should look at in the same size range (38-45 inches long) as the hobby lobby kit (which is 38 inches long) This size works best for my vehicle, but I will look at other kits as well. I'd like to stay in the ARF realm for now before going to a full blown build.

I would like the kit to be the mentioned size, but also use retractable landging gear. One or two fans is fine. I have seen some good kits of the right size, but they seem to only be belly landers, or kits like my Hobby Lobby one (foam material)

Obviously I figure you guys have the experience in which kits are the best, so I ask for your knowledge in finding a kit.

The F/A-18 is my first choice, an A-10 is my second. I will buy and build both kits over time, it is just a matter of which kit fits me best in deciding which one to go with first.

Thanks for any help and direction you guys can provide me!

Dave

HET has just released an F-18 that's a twin (70mm fans) and I think it can use retracts, not 100% sure about that though. Check out ejf.com. Also on rcgroups, there's a build thread on a HET Mig 29 that's the same size and the builder is installing retracts.

Thanks Freebird for the response. I'll look into the twin edf version and see if it is compatible with retracts.

its bigger but to set it up as a edf it would be nice to have, yellow aircraft f-18 single. they build nice and easy for a larger scale ducted fan and they also sell nice retracs and scale like struts.
but thats just me.

That looks sweet, thanks Maverick. I didn't realize that even going that big that EDF's were used... I thought at some point the power to push the bigger ones simply required the turbines. Do you know how the performance is with single and twin .82 ducted fans?

Stupid question, are all ducted fans electric, or do the larger ones run on fuel engines?

Also, wish they would post a price list on their site so I can consider them accordingly.

you bet...no most piston powered ducted fans are almost all able to convert. more power less weight in some cases. the f-18 kit is 600.00 that plane i would keep a single. but the twin f-18 yellow sells can also be powerd by 2 larger fans. if you want to look at a really cool larger electric jet look at bvmjets.com electra 211 mph.

go to yellowaircraftsandiego.com they have a better site.

Excellent... Thanks Mav. The site you listed was not found, but I found this via google http://www.yellowaircraftplanes.com/Home.html and I assume it is the same as you mentioned, must have changed web addy?

I like this F-18 kit (single)... $140 retract kit as well, any experience building Yellow Aircraft?

EJF advised me tonight that they will be selling the F18 twin 70mm as a single 90mm which will accept retracts starting next month. Any preference between Yellow and EJF (HTE kit)

Forgot to ask... how long will these larger electric ducted fan kits run on batteries? Are they in the same range (6-8 minutes) but just use larger capacity batteries?

hey...yeah they last about the same in flight time 5-6, not sure about the ejf f-18 mite have to look that up. the yellow is all glass fuse with balsa sheated wings then glassed. its more scale i beliave then the ejf. the kits build nice if you have building experiance. glassing painting body work things like that. but when complete you will have a vary nice jet for the money and its bigger and easyer to see and faster.

thanks...mike

It doesn't have retracts, but for only $99 include BL edf, 30a esc, and 11.1v lipo, you got a little change left to add in retracts. Take a look at: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6762&Product_Name=AT_Blue_Angel_F/A-18C_ARF_Brushless_Jet&cda=38394.

I understand the retracts for HL's Executive Jet are light and inexpensive, could be a great match up with this.

I have had great success with Hobby City. Their prices are very good on most items, but the shipping can be a bit steep. You get the items faster with EMS Express shipping. However, even with higher international shipping, you often times come in much cheaper than stateside vendors.
