i have a 1946 owat 5cc fixed compression diesel which i wanted to sell but no-one wants it so i guess i'll use it despite being an electric flier.what fuel do you reckon i should use?.mixing my own isn't an option as the health and safety nazis here in the u.k. won't allow me to buy ether so commercially available fuels are the only way to go.also, how the hell do you go about starting a fixed compression diesel?

I am not familar with that engine is that 5cc (.30CID) or 0.5cc (.03 CID) there will be a fuel difference , regardless the engine should be run on the bench to get used to it being fixed compression you control the "timing" with the prop size , proper load, most likely its a plain bushing the PAW mix fuel should work Model techniques on your side makes a fuel martin

it's 5cc not 0.5.i can see it's not going to be as simple as charging a battery!
here's a pic of it.

You will need a needle valve assembly for fuel delivery a c/l PAW may be able to be adapted, unless you can find or have the original

You might consider putting it on E******* it might bring a fair amount then pickup a PAW ( at least no batteries to charge flip and go) martin

we have a number of collectors on the site one may be willing to swap for a complete running engine such as a PAW

You have a bit of a problem-fixed head diesels were generally adjusted by propload and fuel-ie having no means of adjusting the compression, the only significant variables were the prop size and fuel mix-and they generally used much much higher % of ether than is commonly used these days. If you cannot mix your own fuel then you're wasting your time-unless you can persuade one the the local fuel blenders to custom mix you a blend-and then how do you determine what blend-unless you've been able to experiment beforehand. Catch-22.
Best place to start is looking up one of the old diesel books-CE Bowdens, Ron Warring's etc. Ron Moulton's 'Model Aero Engine Encyclopaedia' of 1958 gives a formula of 70% ether 30% redex in a fuel table p128. You could contact Model technics and explain the situation and see what their recommendations are-or get on the BMFA discussion list and see if anyone has experience with fixed head diesels-the Clan Owat and Micron would have seen a bit of use in the UK in the late 40's-there may be a few people out there who remember what fuels they used. In the US the Drone was the only fixed head diesel available in quantity-and they soon came up with a variable head for that one!

Whatever outcome-you will need to be prepared for a lot of frustration-I trust you have some previous diesel experience-if you haven't-then forget the whole idea. Fixed head diesels were an evolutionary dead end that only lasted about 5 years-and were rapidly supeseded. no one but no one looks back on them with any degree of affection or nostalgia-because they were such beasts to handle!

Sorry to be so negative-but you need to understand the harsh realities before you start down what could otherwise be a time consuming and rewardless exercise!

Hello,
I'll buy the Paw

Let me know how much you are asking, if you can send it Royal Mail Small Packet to Canada, that would be great!
Thanks,
Ola

OWAT 5 cc diesel was a United Kingdom 1946 fixed compression model. The United States had a fixed compression 5 cc diesel known as the Drone. Actually two different models of the 5 cc diesel. The second model (1948) has a ball bearing and in the photo. I ran it a couple of summers ago with fixed compression using various thickness head gaskets and props with Olde English Mix diesel fuel. A bit hard to start, but you opened the needle valve about 1/2 turn and leaned it out after starting during warm up. Got that tip from David Owen. Adding some extra ether would have made it easier. Tried to start with the fixed compression head on a cool Fall day and could not start the beast. Installed a variable compression head and much easier to start. Jack Hiner USA

The engine is a French Micron 5cc (.30) of the 40's and was Leon Shulman's inspiration that lead to the Drone Diesel.
It should be worth a bunch to the engine collectors.
