Hi guys,
I picked up a used Norvel .074 a year or so ago but just got around to bench running it last week. The compression seemed less than I expected. There is NO pinch at TDC and compression is weak when hot. The only 7-3 prop I had was a wood Zinger. I was disappointed to get only 12,500 on 25% fuel.
My Tower order arrived with more props and I get 16,500 on an APC 7-3. (I since found a Zinger 6-4 wood in my stash which turned 18,000).
This is the engine as I received it, with one shim which measures 0.008.

My question is: does this sound reasonable for a used (abused?) engine? I was looking for another 1,000 RPM or so on the APC 7-3. Any comments?
Thanks,
Al

Al, you're a tough guy to please! 16,500 with a APC 7x3 is what I usually get. I run mine on 15%. After a few runs some get loose enough to hit 17,000+

CP thanks for the come back,
Sounds like this engine is in at least average condition. I was concerned about the weak compression. I intend to put it into a Herr Extra that I have had for awhile in spite of all the negative comments that it will be under powered. I didn’t want to start out with an engine that was over the hill. And yes, if I don’t like it I will swap in a .15, but as they say ‘there is a principle at stake.’ Just have to see for myself.

If you are worried about it, you can get new piston/cylinders from Lite Machines for a very attractive price, and they come with a mostly complete heli engine attached!
