Hello all of you classic pattern guru's,

I am curious about an old pattern plane called the Misbehavin. A friend of mine has been flying a version of one for over well over 30 years, but he has made multiple revisions to the plane throughout the years to suit his flying style. My friend tells me that the plane was originally available as a kit, but I don't remember the kit manufacturers name. If its any help, my friend and I live on the east coast which is where my friend used to fly in contests. I don't have a digital camera, so I cannot post a picture of the current plane. I can tell you however that it is a mid wing 60 size plane, and I know this may sound stupid, but the profile of the fuselage reminds me somewhat of a P51 Mustang ( I can hear all of you laughing now ) As far as time line goes, I don't know when it was produced, but I can tell you that it flew before the Phoenix 7 was available.

Any more information on the original plane would be greatly appreciated. I know I didn't give you guys much to go on, but I'm betting one of you, pardon the expression, old timers know the plane I am trying to describe.

Do any of you want to bet who comes up with the information on the plane? My money is on RFJ... I don't think there is, or ever was a pattern plane he isn't familiar with.

Thanks in advance

Yes, I remember the plane and it was a kit. Maybe a jack Stafford design? I'll see if I can find something on it. (Also, yes I'm an old f_rt!)

Good call Paul. It is a Jack Stafford design from the early 70's. Not sure if it was kitted but the plan was/is available from the the German magazine Flug und Modelltechnik as shown below. Also listed in the AMA plans catalogue.

Ray,
I think you are on the right track. I spoke with my friend again yesterday about the plane. Even though he didn't remember it was a Jack Stafford design, I can certainly see the similarities to the picture you posted. My friend also started with the original design somewhere around 1969 which even sort of corresponds with the picture you posted of the Misbehavin II dated 1970. The biggest difference I see is from the picture you posted is the vertical fin/rudder which my friend said he changed from the original kit. I am going to send the picture you posted to my friend and see if it shakes loose any cob webs and I'll let you know the outcome.

Freebird,
Glad to see back on RCU. I hope you are doing well. I'm looking forward to see more of your Banshee build. Also, you are correct about your comment. The plane is an excellent flyer that tracks well even in less than ideal (i.e. windy) conditions.

Paul,
Don't feel too bad, I remember 1969 too.

David,

The first (and only) mention of the Missbehavin' I could find in a Jack Stafford advert was in the August 1968 issue of MAN.

Everyone,

My friend and I talked more about his plane and about some of the changes he made yesterday. Like I said earlier, the biggest change was in the tail. My friend said he changed it to, what he called a "Mooney" tail. On this tail the rudder to fin connection is not vertical (90 degrees). The top of the fin/rudder are approximately 110 to 120 degrees and the rudder is more triangular shape being wider at the bottom. His is the only plane I have ever seen with this tail. The other two changes he made were in the wing. He went to a fully symetrical air foil and eliminated the taper in the wing's thickness.

Thanks for all the valuable information. I will look into the AMA Plans Catalog to see if it is indeed the same plane, but it sure looks like it to me.

I hope everyone has a great flying season this year!!!

Ray,

Thats a very interesting picture. Obviously, the fin is a different shape on the Misbehavin, but the fin to rudder angle looks just like that. I've always wondered why my friend changed the tail on his to this design, but I've never gotten around to asking him.

Thanks for all the help!!

David,

There was a theory, back in the single channel days, that a swept forward rudder leading edge helped keep the nose up in a turn although why you would need this on an aileron equipped model like the Missbehavin' I don't know. Perhaps he just liked the shape!
