Thank you MinnFlyer, I think that muffler will work just fine.

I have a question about cutting the cowl. I have been working the opening for the cylinder head clearance and I think I have it pretty close. The problem is I can't fit the cowl onto the plane to make the final fitting adjustments. The head and prop shaft stick out so far that I can't wiggle the cowl into place. Is it ok to cut the cowl in the small strip between the head and fuselage to enable fitting?

Yes you can. Just put a screw on each side of the slit when you bolt it on

i can't imagine a cub w/a 2 stroke. the four stroke just sounds right. i have a CG clipped wing (w/4 servos in the wing for scale type barn door ailerons and flaps, just for fun), it has a os 70fs and MA 13x6. great combination, lots of power, heavy engine balances a/c well.

the four stroke mufflers seem to fit easier.
to fit a cowl - mount the engine on the mounts, positioned the proper distance from firewall to back of prop/spinner as told in plans, mount it on the firewall on the bolts to be sure it fits as required, then take it off. set the cowl inplace w/the front spacing about 1/8" to the back of spinner for clearance. hold as needed w/tape. anticipate the right thrust and eye ball as close as possible. make several sharpie pen marks at the back edge of the cowl and a line across to register verticle on both sides.
take the cowl off, bolt engine mount to firewall. i use heavy cardstock for templates. cut pcs and tape (blue masking tape) to the fuse behind the cowl position marks. using a pencil, draw the cylinder head, muffler and whatever else is in the way. cut this out exactly as you would like them, positon and tape, again behind the cowl position marks. remove the engine, install the cowl on it's marks, allow the cardstock to lay over the cowl, draw w/a sharpie. take it off and cut w/a dremel (i use a small diamond bit to cut), then larger drum sanders to clean up the round corners.
install the engine, slide the cowl over it, align marks, adjust for the right thrust, make adjustments as needed to fit. when satisfied, tape to fuse, drill 1/16" holes for the 4 mounting screws.
one note - when making the holes in the cowl to fit the templates, leave the holes tight. when you fit the cowl to the engine in place, adjustments need to be made, allow about 1/8" around everything and make sure there is an exit to allow air to flow thru.

Thanks for commenting on the right thrust, it's something I would have overlooked. My plans show where to put washer/s but neither it or the instruction book detail the size or thickness of the washer/s. I've centered the engine as good as possible, without right thrust, and the prop shaft sits on the far left of the cowl opening. What thickness washer/s would be a good starting point? Dime thickness, maybe penny, more?

Thanks

i built 4 CG cubs (crashed 3). it seems most a/c including the cub has right thrust built into the firewall. i never added anything for shims behind the mount. it is best if everything fits tight - less vibration and chance of breaking the mount. i have seen shimming wedges (hard plastic?). again, i never added anything behind the mount. check the plans to be sure that they show something. if you do have to add something, the plans will show. once you get the engine established (proper location, distance form firewall, right and/or down thrust), then you can layout the cowl to fit that. what do the plans say to do there? if i added anything, it would be a full size wedge.
i am reading your post again - you say that the engine mount is placed on the firewall where instructed, the thrust plate of the engine (back of prop) needs to be centered w/the center line of the a/c (then the hole in the cowl will be centered on the a/c) - pull a string from the top of the tail across the length of the a/c center line and to the thrust washer (however you can align around the fuse and cabin). shim the left side as needed to make the thrust washer centered. a little shim would go a long way. i use the os70fs w/13x6 k series MA w/a aluminum spinner nut (and lock nut behind it, 4 strokes back fire some times). lot's of power and balances well. i hope you consider a 4 stroke, soo nice on a cub.
the three links are tower hobbies ernst engine mount wedges. the first is .60 size, then .40, then .20. this should help.

I am building one of these now. This thing is really built like a tank. Ive built a bunch of Cubs but this is my first Anniversary Cub on the building board. The build is going well and also pretty fast although I do think a new builder would have problems with this as a first build. The wing is kinda radical with the nearly 2x4 spars and strip ailerons. The fuse would double as a lethal weapon if you decided to go after someone with it. It is tough. I did add a small amount of downthrust to the .52 4s so that the cowl would follow the lines of the fuse. I will mount the struts with metal tabs and I will add jury struts to keep it looking like a real Cub. Gonna use Cub yellow MK and put the lightening bolt down the side. My impressions are that this is a good quick building super tough model. Dont know how it will fly but I'll soon find out.

I've flown many cubs and I like the way this one flies the best - Of course, the wing's gotta be clipped!

Hi all!

Im working on my first Cub now also! I ended up going with a 2 stroke .46. A four stroke was just not in the budget. I've included some pics.

I've been working on it here and there for about two months now.

I bought this kit from a friend who lost interest in it and moved on to another plane. He sold me the kit for $7.00. The wing was built and joined but, he had not started on the fuse.

When I got it home, I realized he had bent the torque rods for the ailerons in the wrong direction. I had to cut them out and install servo mounts in the wings for two servos. I hate to add weight to it but, it was the simplest way to fix the problem.

On the bright side I can see how fast the plane will fly back wards when it's windy using flaperons! lol

Regarding two-strokes in a Cub mentioned in a previous post.

I lean toward four-strokes myself, but I have heard a few good two-strokes also. When throttled back and blowing through a manifold type of muffler (not quiet), the two-stroke engine can sound very realistic as well. Especially those in the larger sizes (.90 on up - the more up, the better). The trick is to run them with a large diameter, heavy and low pitch prop.

I've got one that's going to be a Super Cub using a Precision FBG cowl.
