I'm stumped and looking for help. Here is the situation...6V 1400mah Sanyo Rx pack from Radical RC (I get all my batteries from there...great stuff). After a few "break-in" cycles, the pack reads 100% of rated capacity. I am conviced that the pack is healthy.

I go to the field with a new plane, start & adjust the engine (maybe 5 minutes), range test w/ motor running (maybe another 5 minutes), taxi test (maybe 7 more minutes), shut down (and power down) & re-fuel, re-start & a few more high-speed taxi runs, then maiden flight (take off, 4 circiuts around the patch, land). Everything is good in the world. I go back to the pit area for a post-flight check-up (bolts tight, etc.) & decide to check the battery on my Hobbico ESV. To my surprise, it is reading below the "green arc" (bottom of green arc is 6.4V on this meter...I was reading approx. 6.3V actual). I didn't fly again.

When I got home, I discharged the Rx battery on my Digipace3...and read 1212mah! This is over 86% of capacity! So why would my ESV say "STOP FLYING!!!" when I still have 86%+ capacity left? What is the "normal" Rx voltage at which we should stop flying (assuming a 5 cell Nicad)??? Is my ESV just super conservative?

Any thoughts???

With my 6V batteries when they reach 6V under load I stop flying, ( I use a 600mA load) with 2000mA batteries. BTW this is on 35% Giant scale Extra 260

At 6.3 volts under load most of the capacity should still be in the pack. At 6.0 volts under load the pack should be at about 50% capacity.

Ignore the green arc on your ESV. It is extremely conservative. You are doing the right thing. Fly a few flights, go home and cycle the pack. Revise your stop flying voltage based upon the capacity left in the pack. Keep doing this and you will eventually have you own custom stop-flying voltage. Be sure to leave some capacity in the pack as reserve. Also, be sure to let the voltage stabilize after connecting your loaded ESV. The voltage will slowly drop for several seconds after you connect the ESV to the battery. The reading you want is when it becomes stable. Depending upon how long since your last flight and the current draw of your ESV, this may be 10 seconds or more.

Great news...thanks! Yep, I do let the ESV "settle" before trusting it...in the scenario described above, it read 6.5V initially, then gradually slid down and settled @ 6.3V. Although I've been flying for 15+ years, this is my first experience with running 6V on a Rx. Just wanted to be safe & hear from others.

BTW - I'm running five Hitec 5645MG digital servos plus a standard Hitec 425BB. Is this 1400mah pack appropriate??? (aggressive "sport" flying and moderate "3D" flying)
