I purchased one in the fall. It worked beautifully, but for only about 6 voyages. I sent it back, and they immediately agreed to replace it. Unfortunately, they sent it to the wrong address, so it is in the US and I am in SE Asia! I replaced it with a Chinese clone, the Emden 16, by WSN. So far it has worked great.

It is a tiny little sub for a pool, and you want to be careful not to let it sink to the bottom, as it is only designed to depth of 1/2 meter. It is a fun little gizmo, the only toy sub that dives statically. The ballast system doesn't seem to be very proportional, so I tend to hit the dive button, and then immediately press the surface button. You can trim the ballast to where it is slightly positive (surfacing) or negative (diving) but never perfectly neutral. I prefer the slight negative buoyancy, and then the foward momentum keeps it from sinking.

I hope that Graupner as fixed whatever problems the sub has, as it is a nice little boat at a fraction of the cost of the real ones. Here is a link to a you tube of the graupner

I see the version I now have is on ebay for 18 pounds

Hope this helps

It does have a ballast tank. It is a not truly proportional, but it definitely works. As I said, you can't seem to get neutral ballast, but either a slightly negative or slightly positive. In a deep pool, I run it slightly positive, so it doesn't sink too deep, while on a shallower pool, I set it slightly negative. Be warned that there have been a lot of returns on the Graupner. I suspected as much when they agreed to replace it no questions asked. I have now sailed the Emden 16 version for a longer period of time than the 1st Graupner, and it still works.

What are some common problems with it?

Anyone know if NiCad or NiMHs will work for this sub? I heard they don't have the voltage, but is that true? Will they just take longer to charge or not work at al?

The problem I had with the original Graupner was that it would simply not run. After the motors would not work, it also did not charge. It just died after a few uses, and I understand there have been a lot of returns. A pretty sophisticated and small unit for the price.

Just got my U-16 in the mail today.

The piston tank ballast system is much more precise than I thought. While it is difficult to make the sub "flink," I'm surprised by the performance. The ballast system control is good as is the ability to turn the sub WHILE it's traveling forward.

It seems that NiMHs are able to charge the sub, too.

Is it just me, or does the charger make clicking noises while charging?

I decided to dissect the U-16 since I was very curious as to how the sub worked.
