My son accidentally left his 800 mAh 7.4 volt lipo battery in his helicopter and the battery drained down to the point where the charger that came with the helicopter wouldn’t recognize it (Blinking red light indicates “battery gone wrong”). I tried to charge the battery with my newly replaced 989, and had no luck as well. As an experiment, I disassembled the balance plug and found one cell to be at 0 volts. I set my 989 to Power supply, adjusted the volts to 3.6, and set the amps to 0.1 and carefully monitored the battery while charging. Every once in a while I stopped the unit to check the actual cell voltage, but I discovered that as the battery voltage increased toward 3.6 volts the amps automatically decreased down to 0.00 amps. As a side note, I thought it was pretty cool that as the amps decreased the meter resolution increased to hundredths of an amp scale. Anyway, when the amps tapered off to 0.00 I turned off the 989 and saw I had 3.2 volts on the previously dead cell. I reassembled the balance plug and used the charger that came with the chopper to charge and balance the battery. After a half dozen flights the battery appears to be doing just fine. No over heating of the battery, no swelling, and the same capacity as before. Needless to say, my son has to charge the battery in the garage inside a steel container these days, as I’m not sure I can trust it. I wonder, has anyone else tried reviving dead lipos with the 989, and what was your experience?
Regards,
SOS
