Does anyone out there know of a formula, to figure out the wing area + weight of plane, to tell me what size of motor/ engine to use?

You have to factor in the kind of performance you expect out of the plane. I can give you a rough idea for sport flyers with good vertical.
.049-.061 150-300 sq inch 9-14 ozs
.074-.10 200-450 sq inch 16-22 ozs
.15 250-650 sq inch 22-40 ozs

It is really a kick to see a little .15 pulling around a 66 inch span RC combat plane, they call it "Slow Survivable Combat", but it really is pretty lively. The minimum weight is 40 ozs, and a plane that size is tough to build less than that. The other sizes given categorically are very general, but realistic as far as weight to wing area goes.

Thanks, CP, I'm about to enter the 1/2A class , and think it might be a can worms compared to what I'm used to.

CNP, if you already have experience with model aviation, there isn't too much new to learn. Spend some time reading the threads here and pick out a project you like the looks of. If you want to fly 1/2A planes that are light enough to forgive mistakes, carefree to launch and have great performance, try some of the custom designs that the forum members here have drawn up and kitted. None of the commercial 1/2A kits that come to mind fly as well as your DNUs, SkyDrills, SkySharks...and when something does go wrong they are heavy enough to do more damage to themselves.
