Maybe I am the only one dumb enough to do this but I put a GP velocity stack on my 3MM 53. I never even gave it a second thought but I used the bolts that came with the stack. Wrong move!

First the threads on the new bolts were different which ended up stripping the threads.

Second the length of the new bolts are too long which ended up destroying the reed valve seat.

Obviously I had an awful time trying to start the engine until I took off the reed block and discovered my problem.

Don't use the long bolts that come with the GP Velocity Stacks on the 3MM 53!!!!

P.S. I really like the 3MM 53 but had a problem with gas down the side of my airplane. I will try the V.S. when I get a new block.

Ouch!
On a positive note I can tell you that I had the same issues with my 3mm53toc too. Tried flipping the reed block and carb assembly around which took care of alot of the raw fuel spittle.... then I added a velocity stack and that took care of 99% of the rest of the spittle issue. Just ran mine for the first time this season last week and it ran great. 6800+ on a 22x8 bunny

If I am not mistaken, I believe Tom has had a replacement block made of aluminum, and also some sort of reed upgrade as well with it...

I did a similar thing when installing a stack on my 53toc, but by flipping the carb 180* and then installing the stack, and then installing a spacer (1/4" under the stack- I used the correct size (length and thread pitch/dia) bolt, but the repeated removal, and installation took its toll on the threads in the block..
Rest assured Tom has a handle on it!!

Yes, I finally received the shipment of the last parts, so the hop-up kits are ready to go. $69 buys you 200-350 rpm, metal threads for the carb screws, etc.

In my particular application, I used it to get my "intake" closer to the outside of the cowl... for some reason, I was getting a low pressure situation inside the cowl, which wasn't allowing the engine to get enough air. When I cut a hole in the side of the cowl to allow air to get more directly into the carb, it helped, but I realized that when I cupped my hand next to the hole in the cowl, my rpm's increased, and the engine seemed WAY HAPPIER... I ordered a stack, and proceeded to fashion a scoop out of an old wheel pant to direct air DIRECTLY into the carb. once I received the velocity stack, I bolted it up and noticed that it still seemed a bit too far away to achieve my goal, so I again fashioned a 1/4" spacer from plastic sheet stock to put the inlet of the stack/carb directly into the throat of the scoop much in the same way of the early "ram air" scoops found in drag race cars.. It worked like a champ! probably overkill, but looks cool, and WORKS!

Most of the time people use the stacks to further reduce fuel spitting from the carb..... basically, it just makes the distance the fuel has to travel to eject itself out of the carb (in turbulent intake situations) farther... works good to reduce fuel on the inside of the cowl by at least 75% or so in my opinion.... I really dont think it will increase performance noticeably....
