I have been flying for a year and a half now with the same plane and engine and I have never had a deadstick until yesterday. The engine i have been running is a Super Tigre .61 spinning an 11x7 Master Airscrew prop. I was doing circles around my field, then I lowered it to half throttle, the engine spat and sputtered 2 or 3 times then It died. I circled it around then the wind was pushing up behind it, It was headed straight towards the neighbors house, so i spun it around once more and tried to land it as softly as I could in the bottom of the field. The end product wasn't to awful bad, but there was a few splinters.

I have came to find out after doing a tough look over on the engine that the base where the high speed needle goes in was loose. I fixed it, not it just purrs like a kitten! Now I have to wait for a calm day, wind's bucking around 25-30 MPH here in mid-mo.

Dead sticks are a fact of life. Weather it's a loose carb, poor tuning or just plain running out of fuel. It sounds like you kept your wits about you and set it down as best you could. I've seen some crashes from deadsticks that were much worse than they should have been because the pilot panicked when the engine quit. Airplanes arn't helicopters...They won't fall out of the sky, they will still fly. It's just a matter of how long and how far.

Sometimes out at the field I'll randomly cut the throttle to idle and see if I can glide it back to the runway and shoot a touch and go. It's a good exercise for a real deadstick and I think it's made my landings better.

lol...I wouldn't call that a crash. That's more like a bump or a bruse. The wing is still attached!

Hopefully we'll all get some good winds soon!

That all is very true. There's a guy at my flying field, he has a Twist .40 with an O.S. 55AX. The last time I was out with him, I guess the engine wasn't broke in all the way and quit, he dinged his plane up pretty bad. It didn't help that he was just a beginner. He bought that twist right after he had soloed with a trainer. This Big Stik is only my second plane.
Thanks for the compliments. I plan on flying today, only supposed to have an 8mph west wind.
I land coming in from the west, so hopefully everything goes good today.

here is a tip. always have a mental plan of what to do in every part of the flight if the motor quit. its the first thing they teach you in flight school. dont panic fly the plane and keep the airspeed up. how close are the houses? looks like you tore the gear plate out. easy fix

Ya, ripped the bottom out of it. I just mixed up some 30-minute, clamped it together and let it set for awhile. I'm probably going to fly today, hopefully it holds up. I fly from my horse pasture, so it's a little rough. The neighbors house is close to 40-50 yards from my runway. My so called runway is somewhere around 150- 200 ft long. I will admit that I didn't go far enough out over my house. My runway is between my house and the neighbors house, so I have to be extra careful. Thanks for the advice 2.

I do have a membership at my local RC field. When I say local, I mean 20 miles away. I live out in the country, so it's just a little bit of a drive to get there. I do admit that it isn't very safe. I haven't seen a whole lot of open fields around my place to fly from though. Most of the fields I see are crop, and aren't anywhere near level. ???
