Status: offline 		I don't need bells and whistles and I don't have any issues with channel conflicts, I just want a radio with good range and is resistant to interference. Is a cheap 2.4 GHz radio going to do any better than a 75 Mhz FM radio?

Status: offline 		yes. If what you want is reliable control, no glitches, no interference, and no chance that the one time you get the chance to race someone you will be on the same channel as them, then you want 2.4ghz...

If you dont need bells and whistles, you can get a losi RTR with a 2.4Ghz radio.... you can use the TX with normal spektrum RX's.... the new 1/10 Desert Truck has a 2.4 radio included for $229, or if you prefer minis the mini lst2 is $199.

I was considering the Futaba 3PM 2.4 GHz, but I can't seem to find any discussion on range limitations. I like to run in huge open parking lots and cover a lot of ground, not sure very many people here do that.

Status: offline 		Range limits with a 2.4 Ghz radio??? Dude, is like having a portable satelite with you Don't worry. The 2.4 Ghz we using it in planes and helis too, so don't bother.

Status: offline 		Go with the 2.4 and do't look back. They are more than affordable now. I think that FM will become a thing of the past, before long.

Status: online 		I have a bunch of both. I have a JR XS3 and also the Novak Synthesized FM module in my M8 with 6 or so XXTRA receivers and JR RS300, RS310 receivers.

I also have a Spektrum module and 5 Spektrum Pro receivers.

I am perfectly happy with the performance of the FM stuff personally. I have never had a problem with glitching or interference at all. The FM stuff can be had pretty cheap on eBay for people who are upgrading.

I am in between with both, but I would take FM over Spektrum if price was considerably cheaper. If the price were similar I would go Spektrum.

I have a Futaba 3PM 2.4. Its simply an awsome radio! Much better (feature wise) than the spektrum DX2/3.... you will probably have trouble seeing the car to control it before you go out of range...

Status: offline 		I was looking for a 2.4 Ghz system to replace the AM RTR radios I had.

But I was able to get 2 FM 75Mhz systems (3PM and MX-3) for the same amount on ebay. Now I use both when I want to bash with my fiancee.

Never had glitches or signal loss.

Yes there are range limits, in fact Futaba's manual for the 3PM says max range is 80 meters under optimum conditions. In my experience planes and helis are much less prone to radio problems than cars, so the fact that aircraft radios now operate at 2.4 Ghz doesn't really prove anything.

75 Mhz RC systems have twice the transmitting power and have much less path loss than 2.4 Ghz systems, so in a low noise environment I would expect the 75 Mhz radios to do better. The problem is that most people don't run their cars in huge open areas so it's probably tough to know what will work best in my situation. Maybe I'll buy one of each type

80 meters is over 260 feet.... thats almost a football field... I cant even imagine trying to control an rc car from that far away.... it wouldnt be fun... 80 meter range is way more than enough....

If you're just playing around on a straight road or in a large parking lot, then 260 feet is trivial. I've had my 1/10 scale car out to 350-400 feet, and would do 300 feet routinely.
