Hi,

Looking to make a trade for a warbird that has a Super Tigre G4500 on the front. I'm totally unfamiliar with these big ST engines. I know they guzzle fuel, but any other input would be greatly appreciated. Supposed to give guy answer tonight and pickup this weekend.

See pic of actual engine...

Thanks!

Well, I've never had one of these, only a few of its smaller cousins. I see them go quickly on *bay and RCU buy & sell. They must be a desireable engine despite their thirst for glow fuel. This engine does run well on low oil content fuel with no nitro, so it would be very inexpensive to mix your own fuel for this beast.

They are good engines but watch out for that J-Tech muffler. They tend to not have enough volume and cause detonation and over heating of the engine. The mufflers do not have enough internal volume.

Dave, it powerful thirsty because its its powerful, it takes fuel to make power no matter what the engine configuration or the name it wears. The 4500 is very smooth running, 5% is about the max on nitro and after break in it can run safely on 12% lube. Not fussy about the glow plug. Prop for under 8,000.

My concern regarding these engines lies in what my impression has been of them... probably unfounded. Hard to...start, tune, and keep running. I have never personally owned a big ST, I usually fly gassers. This one is relatively low time. Maybe I read something over the years about these engines, but I can't figure out where I got this negative impression.

What size prop does one use on this engine? The biggest glow engine I've dealt with was an OS 1.60FX years ago. That spun an 18X6 I believe.

My first thought was to take this engine out, sell it and put in a gasser. But, if this is a good engine, as in starts and keeps running, then I'll leave it in. Not too scared about fuel consumption... I am more worried about engines being hard starting and unreliable.

Something in the 20x6 to 20x8 range, mine is converted to Diesel and I'm going with a 22x10 which it will turn in the 6,800 rpm neighborhood. I'll see what I can dig up for ya info wise.

Don't forget the fuel requirements that Hobbsy mentioned.

They require big Super Tiger fuel

I never had any problems running any of the big ST engines on regular old Omega 5% fuel. It's 17% oil content and the engine didn't care.

I think it's perfectly okay to run these engines on "off the shelf" fuel if you can't get the low oil ST fuel locally. I ran the 2000, 2500, 3000 and 4500 on Omega 5% fuel and never had a lick of problems with any of them from running that fuel.

Two words to describe the ST4500:

Stump Puller

Prop it around 70007300RPM on the bench. 20-10 prop works good.

I'm not sure if you know this, but they GUZZLE fuel like a thirsty camel drinks water.
