Status: offline 		Hi i have finally decided to build a workbench and i was wondering if anyone here could give me any suggestions. i only own a T-maxx but i think that a workbench is a significant need.

Status: offline 		Make it at least 3 feet deep and 5 feet wide. I didn't and man i can't tell you how much i regret it. By the nature of the hobby you probably will expand you collection, so i wuld make it fairly big so you can use it for you cars and put your tool box on it. Like ZJ said put a lip on it all the way around.

as big as you can

i don't care for lips
on workbenches though
i prefer magnetic trays
to hold screws and small parts

That to, those will work better. I'm not sure if there easy to come by though. Very good idea!

Status: offline 		i also have a couple of lights above my bench attached to a shelf a use to hold some of my supplies and tools.. my eyes aren't what they use to be and you really need some good light to see what you are doing, i also have a storage unit underneath it with doors to keep my tools and extra parts and supplies.. plus a good power strip will come in handy for your charger and dremmil and lights..


here is a picture of the kind of lights i use.. i also use these types of bulbs.. they put off a lot of light.

Status: offline 		If you can get a lunch traylike used in cafeterias works extremely well. It has a lip and is small enough to hold lots of parts yet still large enough to hold the parts from the vehicle. You can also use one of those spinning serving trays that sit in the center of tables for various servings, they will spin and allow you to get to the vehicle rather well.

Status: offline 		Leave room under the workbench for your knees. You want to be able to sit on a chair while your working. A small vice or two mounted to the table somewhere comes in handy, especially for soldering. I have a power bar screwed to my bench top that I plug my tools and lights into. This way I have plenty of sockets and because of the lights I don't forget to unplug it. A power supply with different voltages is nice to have, mine isn't permanent but if I ever pick up another one it probably will be. If you don't have a ton of space a table would probably be more convenient than a bench, especially if you put wheels under it. A lazy Susan style car stand would probably be really handy. The big thing is where to store your tools - do you add room to the bench for tools or do you keep them somewhat portable in a toolbox?

Status: offline 		mine use to be a model train rail road

so all it is is a rectangle box made of 2x4 that has 3 2x4's going up the middle for support with like polyboard for a top and it sits on 2 saw horses

I have two lamps 1 being a regular desk lamp and the other a big clip on shelf kind of light with a long neck to reach all over the place

was thinking of putting on a roof gutter to catch fallen parts and dripping liquids

It is the lid from one of those large plastic storage containers.
It helps to keep dirt and parts contained.

Status: offline 		I've grown fond of making simple benches with just 2x4's for legs and various thickness plywood (or particle board) for the bench top and a reinforcing skirt around it. That's the most recent bench I've made for my mini lathe.

Status: offline 		I use a 30" x 80" luan door blank from Home Depot. I put a set of their folding legs on it so if need be, I can store it easily. A workbench stool provides comfortable seating and I use clamp-on goose-neck lamps for great lighting. It provides all the space I need for chargers, soldering equipment, two car work stations with rotating car stands, and plenty of space for all of my tools. It also doubles as my R/C plane workbench. Works great and cost me about $50.
