Had a strange problem with an old ST.51 today. It's ten years old so is a pre-China version. It would start, run and idle just fine, but after 3 to 5 minutes of running it would suddenly die at wide open throttle. Tried three new plugs, checked the tank and made sure it was not foaming, tried a larger prop (12-6 instead of 11-6 APC), and changed fuel. It got some better, but nothing solved the problem. Resulted in five dead-stick landings. It has been on the shelf for eight years, but it has about 50 flights on it and was never a problem in the old days. In fact, I got mine after a friend ran one on a Sig Four-Star 40 all season without a single problem (200+ flights). I am really in the dark over what to try next. Any ideas would be appreciated.

G'day Mate,
Did you try adjusting the high speed needle valve a couple of clicks richer?

When you had a deadstick, did you re-fill the tank?

What I'm getting at is, the klunk line may have slipped off of the brass tubing that goes through the stopper. I had an engine start doing this out of the blue, for apparently no reason. I traced it down to the fuel tank; the klunk line (pickup tube) slipped off of the brass tubing in the stopper. It would run just fine until the level in the tank uncovered the tubing... always right around 5 minutes of flight time.

Check your pickup line in the tank
