Well my lack of money to buy a 1/5 scale, and the other homemade rc car thread has inspired me to build a gas rc car.
It will prbably be 2wd,and i want to spend as less money as possible.
So i need some help from you guys that own a 1/8 scale buggy or a gas engine.
I was thinking of buying a nbuggy rolling chassis (front end and rear end and chassis) and then going from there.
Would their be enough room on a 1/8 scale chassis to mount a huge gas engine on it?Or will i have to make my own chassis?
If anyone has any ideas of what buggy to use such as a buggy that has a strong drivetrain and the chassis is big enough let me know,so i can pick one up on ebay maybe.
The other problenm is mounting the clutch to the car.I was thinking of using a sprocket and all,or a centrifugal clutch,a pocket bike cluthc or soemthing like that.Any ideas welcome!
Also depending how money is i might just pick a cheap engine up off ebay or if i have some spare money i might pick up a cy23rc. Like i said any ideas welcome!

Engines are cheap. Just search on ebay for them under the name 'brushcutter' and 'whipper snipper'. You should be able to get one for about $10. You need to make sure that the engine you get is a full crank (pullstart at the back of the engine, not on the side of the output shaft) and that it is not too heavy. Do not get an engine any bigger than 25cc, they are too big. Any good quality 1/8th scale buggy will be fine. The transmission will also be fine so long as you keep the diffs packed with grease.

BTW, most good quality weed whacker engine already come with clutches.

Awesome, also now im looking for a buggy or preferably truggy that does not have any mounts in the way that connects the rear end to the chassis.Since if the car has any mounts/bracket in the way it will be hard to mount the engine on.So i need an rc car that the bracket/mount that connect the rear end to the chassis that is small?

that would never handle a gas engine, the shocks would buckle with one bounce, if you could even fit the engine into that tiny chassis and as posted the 1/8 scale diff won't last long, one run i'd bet if that they just can't handle the torque of these gas engines

Naynay, there's a lot of work into building a nice custom project. For $300 you can build something, but how long it will last depends on the exact components and configuration. Remember that, as I've learned, stinging on one part sometimes leads to many, many headaches later.

That being said, I've chosen my projects based on T-Maxx components, partly because of price, the fact that they were lying around and easily obtainable. Badz is right, 1/8 components (diffs, for example) are not made for 20 pounds of goodness. In this particular case, I opted for the 4WD choice, which better distributes the power F/R. For T-Maxxes, the 2 shocks per A-arm was also useful, but don't expect to use stock shock springs since the car will just drop to the floor - I had to make my own out of stiffer material.

I'd say if you can get a cheap engine with a built-in clutch, do so, because mounting a clutch on a leaf blower was not particularly fun.

Anyway, ask more questions if you need help. Good luck!

I also thought that the 1/8 buggy transmission would not hold up, but I have been proven wrong. I have driven my converted thunder tiger EB4 for a long time now, and I have seen no sign of excessive wear on any of the drive components.
I believe that the best way of protecting your diffs is to purposely set up a weak point in the transmission that will break instead of the gears. In my case, the weak point is the grub screw that holds the sprocket onto the diff outdrive. If something goes wrong, the grub screw will just shear off instead of my differential being destroyed. My car only weighs 6kg, so that helps too.

The suspension, however, is something that has to be dealt with. The stock springs will be nowhere near stiff enough. Soon my car will have LST shocks to fix this problem.
