I would think "500 and 200" amperes will burn the batteries up. If you mean 500 and 200 milliamperes well that is different, isn't it? Big difference really. I think all of us did understand the question and you did give a viable answer, except for clarification on the amount of current - Amperes versus Milliamperes.

Cheers,

Chip

For either NiCad or NiMh, the first charge should be for 16 hours at 0.1C. It may take up to three cycles of this forming charge to bring them up to full capacity. Discharge down to 0.9 volts/cell at not greater than .25C between charges during these forming cycles. Once the forming is complete, then it is quite safe to charge at up to 1C if you are using a peak detecting charger. If not a peak detecting charger, watch the temperature closely and as soon as you detect a significant rise in temperature, stop the charge.

Though I see it often confused or bad advice given, a good rule of thumb to follow is 1Amp chage rate per 1000mah of battery pack maximum. So charge a 1800 pack at 1.8A (max), though I tend to charge smallish packs at 1.0 to be safe and to prolong pack life, charge a 33000mAh pack at 3.3A, and charge your 4200 at 4.2A

1c would be battery capacity divided by 10.

So if you have a 4200MaH battery a 1c charge rate would be 4.2 amps.

NO, 1C is the battery capacity. In the above case the charge would be 4200 mA or 4.2 amps. The battery capacity divided by 10 or C/10 would be the overnight charge rate, or formaing charge rate for new cells.
