I’m in the process of building the 28% Extra and I’m wondering if you guys know where I can find some drop-in light weight replacement parts. I’m not really looking to modifying anything; I’m interested in the easy upgrades such as wing tube, stab tube, gear, wheel pants, spinner, etc, etc, etc. I took the following parts to work today and weighed them on a gram scale to baseline what I currently have. Here’s where I’m at right now.

g oz
Left Wheel Pant 74.6 2.6
Right Wheel Pant 65.6 2.3
Gear 301.2 10.6
Wing Tube 250.4 8.8
H Stab Tube 32.0 1.1
Axles 28.5 1.0
Wheels 109.1 3.8
Spinner 125.7 4.4

If you’ve got some links to parts or some weight numbers on parts I’d be interested to find out.

Thanks,
Pete

Formatting didn't come out quite right, lets try this:

Left wheel pant 74.6g or 2.6oz
Right wheel pant 65.6g or 2.3oz
Wing tube 250.4g or 8.8oz
Stab tube 32.0g or 1.1oz
Spinner 125.7g or 4.4oz
Gear 301.2g or 10.6oz

This isn't a hard plane to lighten up. There was a build thread on it a couple of years ago that is still on the support list somewhere and there are lots of ideas about how to get it really light. Mine has a DA50 on it and is in the low 15 range. I used a carbon wing tube from Wild Hare and carbon gear with titanium axles. I tired Kavan wheels which were really light but didn't hold up. I ditched the wheel pants. I also used a titanium rear gear. For the spinner I went to Esprit Models and got one of their fiberglass spinners which is about the lighest and most inexpensive around. Also, using a wood prop is lighter than a corbon one. I think all of these parts added up were around a pound of savings.

Carbon wing tube from Tom. Tail tube from TnT if they have them, saves about 4 grams..... Titanium axles from Don't Hobby Shop. Carbon main gear from Graphtec. The TnT and TBM gear are the same product. Carbon tailwheel leaf spring from Tom. Sullivan Skylite wheels. Wood prop, not carbon. Fiberglass spinner from Esprit Models. Leave the wheel pants off.

By the time you're done you'll definately saved some weight at a cost of only about $75.00 an ounce

Reality check. Replacing the wing tube, the wheels, and the spinner while using a wood prop are about the only practical items to play with. I only do the wing tube because carbon is stronger. Carbon gear is weaker due to incorrect lay up processes, incorrect material choices, and a lack of heat during the cure. If you don't go nuts with redundant batteries, switches, and receivers it's easy to end up with a 15 1/2 pound plane. It doesn't need to be any lighter than box stock to fly extremely well. Any lighter is just a personal thing.

Aluminum wing tube 1.125 x 37 1/4 " is 9.1 oz.
Carbon fiber wing tube 1.125 x 37 5/16" is 5.4 oz. ( from Wildhare ) Weighed on digital postal scale.

I'll need a couple of days and then I can tell you the differance between the stock aluminum gear and a Graphtec one.

I’ll be interested to hear what the gear weighs in at. It seems that if made right the gear could provide worth while weight savings.

I don’t want to lose the wheel pants. I think it really makes the plane look a lot nicer and also aids in seeing it in the air. I’ve been thinking about making my own wheel pants. I think they could be made pretty light. I’m thinking something like 2 plies of 1k carbon for the shell with a little plywood block incorporated between the plies where the gear mounts. This will be fairly flimsy so maybe a bulkhead behind the wheel out of 1 ply 1k, 1mm Rohacel core, and 1 ply 1k. It's very tempting.

New landing gear not here yet, but another thing to think about is the fuel tank size. I done some quick math and going from a 24oz. tank down to a 16oz. tank would save you 6.5oz. +/- on your RTF weight. Based on an average of 1oz. per min being used, this is certainly something to consider. This could be your most bang for the buck in weight savings.

Be careful of the sizing. Their carbon wheel pants in what is named a size close to 28% are much smaller than the Wild Hare pants. By about 1/3 or more and fitting is impossible without a lot of carbon cutting.

Pylon Racer, I haven't forgot about the gear weight. It's shipping tomorrow and should be here later next week, then I'll post the weight of the carbon fiber main gear.

Main gear from Graph Tech came today. This is for a 28% Edge 540, but you should see similar results on your Extra.
Stock Aluminum gear: 10.6oz.
Graph Tech #216 gear: 8.5oz.
