My guess is that they will both do 5000 packs.

They should charge the 5000s just fine. You may get false peaks the first full charge or two. But after that they should charge with no problem.

You know I have a 960 and I have not used it yet for my higher mah packs ...but when I read threads such as this (and there are a few of them) the response is always unsure at best....

I want to know if they WILL definitely charge the batteries without any issues? False peaks can come from any charger or batts but many have the question about this charger because of what the info states about the limit being 3700 mah... yeah I know it should charge it but will it do so and will it so so safely?

The chart was actually produced some time ago, and the information is now somewhat inaccurate. Those chargers, actually it was the predecessors 819 and 959, used to have a safety timer built in that would limit the time of the charge, which would therefore limit the total capacity put in on a single charge. That total capacity was approximately 3700 mah. Back then when the highest capacity battery was a 3300-3600, it really wasn't a problem. With the advent of the higher capacity batteries, the safety timer has either been eliminated, or extended to the point that it isn't an issue. Once cycled a few time, the 820 and/or the 960 should fully charge a 5000 mah battery with no problems or safety issues. It really never was a safety issue, just a minor inconvenience. I hope this helps to clear this up.

Do you need to unplug the battery and plug it back in to cycle the battery? Does this need to be done every time i charge a 5000mah pack?

When I said "Cycle", I meant a full charge/discharge. Neither charger has the ability to discharge batteries. Keep charging until the charger shuts off and the battery is warm. If the charger shuts off and the battery is still room temperature, then it's not fully charged, do it again. Once the battery is warm, you can discharge it by simply running it in the vehicle. Wait for it to cool, and then charge again. It may take a few of these before the battery takes a full charge in one shot.

Just for the record, I just charged 4 brand new batteries on the 960. These were Trinity/Intellect 4600's, 2 of them were 6 cells, and 2 were 7 cells. Each one charged to full capacity on the first charge with no false peaks. Goes to show you, that the quality of the battery has something to do with it too.
