Hello Masters pilots..

If you are a Masters pilot, chances are you will be judging FAI at some point. In the sequence, there is a center stall turn with 3/4 roll up, and 1-1/4 snap down. When judging you may see the snap stop short and roll the last part of the maneuver to 'stay on the down-line' line. In the following example, you can see this on the right side.

The goal here is to let you think about what you may be seeing.

This picture is a little bit ridiculous and a lot misleading.

First of all, the left series, second picture suggests a negative snap. However, the third picture in the left series, the end of the snap, suggests a positive snap. I'd love to see the pilot that can do both at once

Second, I'm assuming the left series is supposed to be the "correct" way to present the snap? It's true that you need to watch for roll out however the left series suggests some sort of voodoo magic (down elevator cheat after the snap happens, actually) that gets the nose pointing down when it was previously off line... without any rotation.

I may be misinterpreting your objective, but the right series of pictures is correct in every way and is just what judges should be looking for. This bothers me slightly as an FAI competitor myself... I would hate for the snap nazis turn this maneuver into a downline 1-1/4 snap instead of a stall turn with 3/4 roll up, 1-1/4 snap down, if you know what I mean.

Basically, if a judge sees the snap start and end on the same line it should absolutely NOT be an indicator for downgrade.

The figures by themselves do not contain enough information to form the basis of a discussion on this subject, and could be mistaken to imply airplane attitude (as opposed to track) is a judging criteria. The snap in this manuever presents a different appearance depending on whether it is done positive, negative and if wind compensation is involved. All can result in a perfect score.
