Just curious about who has gone gas on the RC Guys Super Decathlon. What engines have been used?

There are a few posts in the other SD thread, but I'm curious about your success (or failure) with various gas engines.

I know a DA or DL 50 would be too much power (that can be compensated for) but are there any 35's that have enoughintestinal fortitude to fly it in any semblance of an aerobatic nature, or 40's that give it the stones to go IMAC Sportsman level? (I know what you'r thinking...a SD will not be competitive in IMAC, but I say BS! If you can fly an Ugly Stik in Basic, then by golly, I can fly a SD!)

Jon

I put a Fuji 43 in mine. Just gong out now to run the engine and set the mixture. Tonight I'll put some baffles inside the cowl for cooling and weather permitting will do the maiden tomorrow.

There's another thread going just above yours with 600+ replies. Lots of gas engines. Check it out.

Yeah, but I wanted to open up a purely gas powered discussion on the airplane. I've read that entire thread, and there are a few that have installed gas, but not a lot of discussion on what methods, problems, successes, types etc...

I inquired long ago in that thread about using the Venom 45, but was advised it was too much engine. I know it is heavier than some of it's bretheren out there. I wanted to know the spectrum of different gas engines that have been used on this airframe.

I mounter my rudder servo in the tail below the elevator servo and made a platform for my battery pack so I could mount it inside the tail where the "N" number is on the sides. Balance came in right on the nose that way.

Cool. Could you remind me what engine you used? What is your all up weight?

Jon

I mounted a DL-50 from DLUSA on my SD. It fits inside the cowl perfectly andI didn't have to add weight to balance. I mounted both my battery backs right on the cg and ignition box forward side of the firewall. It flies absolutey great!!! Not to mention the unlimited vertical climb, it will hover, torque roll and has plenty of power to pull straight out. Before I mounted the engine I coated the firewall with a layer of epoxy and then used fender washers on both sides of the firewall for mounting the stand offs. I ended up useing the stock muffler since it was a perfect fit and the pitss style would have took some modification.

Hill every time I see your engine my hand starts to tremble and I must restrain it from ordering one.

Here's how my Fuji 43 was mounted. I bought the shorter prop adapter for it so I could move the cylinder away from the firewall a little for better cooling. The only thing that sticks out of the cowl is the bottom 1/2" of the exhaust stacks and about 1/16" of the velocity stack.

I know the feeling. I was reading the Top Flite Cessna thread and by the time I reached the end of it, I had ordered one
