Tom,

Hope that you are feeling better!

I met you and Patty at Toledo, and bought one of your Edge V2's, and have spent the last two months getting it put together. Fabulous construction, engineering and quality!

I'm almost done, but I'm finding that I'm very tail heavy, and may have balancing issues at 5" aft of the wing LE. Is this figure correct, or do you recommend another balancing point? Moving all my LIPO's forward to the F1 former, plus adding another 18 oz. forward of the firewall gets me sitting level, but way too heavy.

I'm using a lightweight Evolution 45GX2 (45.53 oz.) up front, with a pitts muffler (11 oz.) I have a smoke system installed with the pump just forward of the wing tube, and the 32 oz capacity tank just aft of the tube. The Hitec elevator servos are tail mounted, and the rudder servo is center mounted with a pull-pull system. The Futaba FASST receiver is mounted to a Smart-Fly power expander coupled with a voltage regulator, and both devices (4 oz.) are mounted just forward of the rudder servo.

I'd appreciate any suggestions that you might have, and can post photos if that will help clarify the issue.

Thanks,

Bob

Depending on how you intend to fly it, 5" may be too forward. I fly mine at 5-1/2" aft of the leading edge and really like it. Not really tail heavy, not overly pitch sensitive, and easy to land. More nose heavy is faster to land. For IMAC type stuff, which is not the Edge's strong point, 5 to 5-1/4" should be ok. For good clean fun and 3D, 5-1/2" and maybe a little more is in order.

You think it's heavy now, just wait until you fill that 32 ounce tank!! That 32 ounce tank is not helping things at all, in several ways. A pair of 16 ounce tanks laid on their sides with the bottoms together ahead of the tube fits just about right and has less effect on the c/g as fluids burn off. Then again, I suppose how much importance you place on smoke may have an influence on what you are willing to trade off. If smoke is the most important part of the flight you'll have to settle for a very heavy plane. If performance is more important you will have to dispense with smoke tank size and volume.

If it was mine I'd take some things out and set them in place one at a time to see how they affected the balance and position adjust from there. That 18 ounces up front has to go!

I mounted my main gas tank under the floor, in the canister opening, in the event I decided to add a smoke tank at some point. This would give a spot to put your smoke tank ahead if the wing tube.

Good ideas in both replies. Thanks!

I did a test balance at 5-1/2" back from the leading edge, and it balanced OK with all the batteries moved up, and the smoke pump mounted in the motor box. I'll try the tank in the canister well next, and can move the electronics forward as well.

Will let you know how it works out.

Bob
