hello all,
i am new to 2.4 gig. i have two planes i am installing r6200 spectrum recievers into. first is a sig mayhem bigger one 90 size.
i am running 4 futaba s3010 and one 3004 for thr. the other is amidwest citabria with 4 s3004 and one 3001 for thr. i have ben using
1000 and 1700 4.8 volt packs for a long time without probs. i am wondering if these reciever packs would be sufficient for the 6200
and servos as stated. or should i invest in replacing them with 6 volt. thanks in advance for any help. andrew wisc.

i would not use them on 2.4 gig i would get some high mAh lipo rx packs they might be more expencive but they might just save you a plane.
P.S make sure you use a propper lipo charger and balancer

Your higher mah pack will likely be ok, but I would carefully monitor the voltage as you use it. It would be good to use a field charger like a Sirius to top off the pack before each flight. Otherwise, get a 5 cell, 1500 mah pack. I prefer nicads over nimh because they don't self-discharge as much and they don't give false peaks when charging.

I don't see why you would need to change what has been working for you just because you went to 2.4 receiver, it doesnt require any more current or voltage than 72htz.
It will operate well below 4v which you shouldn't be flying at anyway

I run a 1700mAh 4.8V pack on a GP Super Skybolt with 5 DS821 digital servos. So Far i have not had any voltage drops to cause an issue with spektrum receivers.

Having said that, the Mayham has huge control surfaces and will likely draw more current from the servos. I would upgrade it to a 6V pack for peace of mind.

Then move the 1700 pack to the citibria.

I don't see why your existing packs would not work well with your 2.4 system. I have used 1000mah NiMh packs with my Spektrum AR9000 without incident.

I prefer to use 2600mah 7.4v LiPos from Troybuilt Models or Fromeco. There are other sources for LiPos, like Duralite, etc., but I have had good luck with TBM batteries. They are not expensive, hold their charge for a long time, and charge relatively quickly compared to NiCad and especially NiMh. They are also LIGHT. I only use NiMh when I need the weight or I am in a mood to abuse batteries. A123 batteries are also a good choice. Even faster charging and they can be beat up quite a bit without damage ( accidental discharge. etc)

Hi I have been flying witha 2.4 dx7 for a while now and have had a few problems with loosing bind on one receiver which i gave the flick. Just recently I lost a brand new pulse 40 due to loosing all radio contact with the plane. The battery pack was fully charged and when tested after crash still had 5.33 v. It was a 4.8 nicad pack. has anyone else had the same problems. On a few other planes with different receivers still 2.4 areas do loose contact with the planes. Ideas would be appreciated.. thanks Norm

Andrew:

You can answer your own question by using a Digital Servo & Receiver Current Meter, sold by Horizon Hobby. Just put the meter between the battery and receiver, turn every thing on, watch the meter and "stir" the sticks. Get the max reading and then do the math.

Remember that your surfaces will be under More load when you are flying.

Any idea what the average increase in current draw would be In the Air? I realize that a 3D flyer puts more of a load on the surfaces than the average person.

As important (maybe even more important) than the size or capacity of the battery is the switch harness and wiring between the battery powering the receiver and the receiver. If it is to small a gage or you are drawing enough current to cause even momentary voltage drops due to the IR drop, you can reset the 2.4GHz receivers (all brands). It only takes a voltage drop to last a few microseconds to cause a problem. You may not be able to even see such a problem on a typical meter, a Voltwatch comes close as it will show these voltage dropouts with the LEDs flickering into the yellow when you stir the sticks.

hello all
thanks for all your responses they were all helpful. i am going with 6 volt 2000mah nimh . i have a voltwatch and loaded the surfaces\ as suggested. seems to test ok. i am going to maiden the plane tommorrow weather permitting. this is the first time
with 2.4. ihave been using fm for a long time. i will have help from experienced club member. if works out good on this plane i will convert out all others to 2.4. my trusty futaba had to be sent in for service and i am trying 2.4 on 2 planes to see how i will like it.

I use one on my century 50 heli. I really put that thing through its paces and all the digitals are always moving. I have tested the new spectrum recievers, (quick connect) with low voltage batteries and they imediatly regain control. My heli uses a subc NiCD 1900mah and has an internal resistance of .4 ohms. 20 gauge wiring all around on a heavy duty futaba on/off switch

I'm venturing into using a spectrum reciever for the first time as well (ar7000) on my somethin extra. Was planning on using a 6V 2700 nimh pack. Do I need to use a regulator or can the receiver handle the 6v pack?
