I don't see why your existing packs would not work well with your 2.4 system. I have used 1000mah NiMh packs with my Spektrum AR9000 without incident. I prefer to use 2600mah 7.4v LiPos from Troybuilt Models or Fromeco. There are other sources for LiPos, like Duralite, etc., but I have had good luck with TBM batteries. They are not expensive, hold their charge for a long time, and charge relatively quickly compared to NiCad and especially NiMh. They are also LIGHT. I only use NiMh when I need the weight or I am in a mood to abuse batteries. A123 batteries are also a good choice. Even faster charging and they can be beat up quite a bit without damage ( accidental discharge. etc)
