John,
Let us know how your CO2 head works out - prop size and what not.

I've wanted to run one at electric only fields...... But then again "No Gas Models Allowed"
Define gas? If they say CO2 is a gas, I could reply "Ok I'll be happy to burn a liquid"

Those plans look great! I think my next project will be a small glider like the imperial, only powered by a 0.20 pee wee. I may even try to cover in tissue for the first time.

ehhhh,.... use Solite.. It's a LOT easier, shiney & bright, AND lighter. By the time you buy the dope, thinner,Brushes or spray equipment, and good tissue... it's actually cheaper! It's also easier to patch. Growing up,. I HATED doping tissue. That's what gravitated me to all-sheet designs. You could clear dope them, add a color trim or two, and be DONE with it! The absolute cheapest I've found Solite commercially is here: http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/solarfilm_lite__solite__2398707.htm If you find it anywhere cheaper..PLEASE, let me know. They have free shipping on orders over $100.00 US. I just wait till I need everything, or expen$ive batteries, motors, or something till it totals over a hundred bucks ..& order.
Solite doesn't shrink as violently as Monokote or other high-temp coverings. is low-heat foam safe (look at the "Foamin'20" ) And is cheaper than paint or dope...AND, is totally fuel-proof. Bob

I LIKE the Gliders too!... You'll note that one of them listed in the plans Is the Commando Invasion Glider By Invasion Model Co. of Chicago IL. circa 1942 I believe it's about the only model the company made,.. haven't found another in years & years. I live about 26 mi from the 82nd Airborne & Special Forces museum in Fayetteville NC. They have a restored WACO glider there. I'm thinking about modifying the plan to make the experimental WACO X-PG-2 with twin engines... Ever since I seen the old photo of a fully loaded XPG-2 lift off under assisted Rocket power, I envisioned a XPG-2 twin with twin English Rapier rocket motor assisted take off....
It would be perfect for two .010-.020's...but GOD!,.. what a BEAR to try to fly, keeping them both running! I think electric is the safest route on that one... The Scientific "Imperial" was designed to compete with Cleveland Models 6ft "Condor" tow-liner in the 40's. Though it has a 6ft span, it is incredibly light, and an .020 would carry it aloft nicely! Bob! Good to see you poking your head out again.

That is still expensive as coverings go.Ever used Doculam? One third the weight of Monokote and so much cheaper than $kote you would squeal for joy like a lttile schoolgirl out of control!!!
Fuelproof and you can paint it on the inside for a glass like shine or on the outside for less shine and drab or flat colors.

I would be glad to send you a sample of some to try. (You have been good to me in the past!)
I gots more than plenty!!!

Robert

P.S.If you paint it on the outside you should scuff the surface real good with steel wool or a good wet or dry paper

P.S.S. Do you have plans for the Scientific Models Parachute Plane??? 40 inch span Rubber model.

So true, Robert,.. sooOOOoo true! Hey,.. I went to Crete once... but, it was an Island Got to swim in the Mediterranean,. then walk 300 yards, & swim in the Aegean sea. I got to build a 1:1 scale Nike/Hercules R/C missile and shoot it off! Then got to watch it go "BOOM" about 70mi out over the sea... was pretty kool. Bob

I was just skimming through this thread, and would like to say thanks for the
info on Early R/C Models. I'm looking for a VR/CS model to build, and wasn't
aware of them. Wow!

HAHAHA!! You must have been editing your response when I answered you Robert.. all I saw was " Build her light & she'll treat you right"(bet my response made a lot of sense, huh? ) I don't have the parachute plane,. I was going to get it from a guy, but the deal fell through I've never tried the Doculam... but I'm pretty hooked on Solite. I don't like painting if I don't have to. still.. it might work well for flats like WWI or II cammo. Does it stick to foam? Bob

I am glad you re read Bob! You don't have to paint the Doculam but it is easy to do. just use the 99 cent spray paints from $-Mart on the inside where the adhesive is. Just fog on lightly. Even I can do it. For electrics you can use the same on the outside. Or you can lightly spray the framework insted and have no color on the Doculam.

Have not tried Doculam on foam but do not suggest it as the temp needed is pretty high.

Sorry about being off topic.

Robert

Raymond uses Floral Spray and has had great success. I like Krylon... works well for me. THe paint and the glue really seem to meld and make a great seal at the edges. Even with deisel. Just dust the glue side or it gets heavy and you may as well have used $Kote. No success with Rustolium, couldn't get the glue to work through it. Or the Ace H/Ware stuff. It cracked and peeled. (On the inside of the structure).

Another nice "suitcase plane" would be the "Super-Liner" by Enterprise Model & Supply Co. in 1957. Now,..the 50's & the 60's were the time of the origonal "multi-tasking models" The Super-Liner was designed by Paul Del Ghatto and had a span of 24" and a legth of 18". Wing area was 80 sq. in. and Stabilizer had 30sq.in. The airfoil section was a modified McBride B-7.. and they dubbed it the "Ritz wing" The construction is straight-but simple, yet very strong. It's basically the same egg-crate type construction I use for my fan fold foam models. The beauty of this design is that it can be used with 3 different sources of power: Towline, Free-flight glow .020-.035, or a Jetex "50" power unit installed on a pod. Today, you can use small electric & sub-micro. You could even buy some Rapier rocket motors and have a rocket launched 2 channel sailplane.

Yup.. I've seen that one Dan,.. teeeeeny thing! I'd get it 40 ft away & wouldn't be able to see it! (I have enough trouble with the Foamin'20!) I started on a Clancy Lady Bug a while back, and decided to make it a "Bi Lady Bug" with a fueselage remodeling making it a bit wider & a inch or two longer. But,. I got hooked on foam for a while & experimenting with it. I plan on making the lower wing a rib bay smaller, or even two. Give it that "stubby-look" (since it doesn't really need it anyway..) Bob
