Hi Everyone,
I have a Tower Hobbies Vista EP and I have a rudder trim problem. I have to give it a lot of left rudder trim whether it is under power or not. I can't see any alignment problems with the plane just looking at it. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to check everything out?
Thanks,
Truman McManus

You need to check the wing for a twist and then use an iron to get the twist out.

Thanks Evan,
You were right, my problem is in the wing. I had another wing for this plane because the first model had a problem and Tower Hobbies sent me a replacement. I flew the other wing yesterday and it flew great.
I cannot see a twist in the bad wing but I know it is there. Can you give me some pointers on how to find the twist. This wing has so many angles its hard to see a problem. I am new to this so it will be a learning experince.
Thanks for any help
Truman

The upward angles at the tip sections of the wings are called dihedral, which makes the wing look like a flattened and widened U. A twist is usually a warped wing section or a section that has been glued at an angle.

Not exacty. First the wing is a polyhedral, it has a dihedral at the center wing joint and a second half way to the tip, a double "V"...

Usually the problem with a warp is that the covering has tightened with the wing in a warped position and the covering holds that warp in. To find out where the warp is have someone hold the wing level (or prop it up on something) and with the wing level and the trailing edge towards you walk back about 20 feet and compare the left and right sides of the wings to each other. You'll see that the left trailing edge is lower that the right. It might be that the inner panels are the ones warped and the outer ones are okay or vice versa. To get the twist out hold the center of the wing between your legs and the left tip in your left hand and twist the left tip cockwise looking at it. That is twist the trailing edge up and leading edge down. It does not take much force to do this and you should see the covering wrinkle when you do it. Take a monokote iron or heat gun and while holding the twist go over the panel that is warped on both sides. Hold the twist while it cools and then walk back 20 feet and look at it again, repeat as needed.

If you see that the right tip is warped trailing edge up leave it and do the left to match. Having the trailing edge warped a little up is good. it is called washout and make the wing more stable by letting the wing root stall before the wing tip.

I did the same with my Sprit 100. Not the warp but the wash out. I took off the wing tip section, steamed it (by putting it on a piece of mesh over a pot of steaming water) and then twisted it up. This really added to the low speed stability of the plane, especially when using spoilers.

Alex, do you have any pix of the slopes there?

Yeah Alex
We need something to aspire to!! Show us those killer slopes. Here in Missouri we just keep the moles on steriods to get bigger hills

OOOPS just noticed your pics! thanks!

Try crack on the moles, they will get depressive and try to dig giant graves for themselves
More pics coming soon, im going to the field to take photos as soon as I leave school, in about 5 hours.... Yeah i know its a lot of time but be pacient
Today the weather forcast at the airport is about 22 kilometers of wind, and the airport is only 6 miles away from the field. Usualy there is about 4 more km of wind at the slope than at the airport.
My Ferox slope racer is almost complete, im finishing painting the fuse and applying the carbon to the tail sections. The wings still have to be covered.

Im using Hobbico MGS-12 micro metal gear servos-will these produce high current draw from my batteries? I am using a standard futaba 600 mah square pack....

Thanks again Evan,
I found the twist in my wing and got most of it out on the first try. I will work on it again. The other wing for my Vista flies so good I just put the bad one aside for now. I caught a thermal two days ago and stayed up 20 min. What a blast!

Thanks again,
Truman

Excellent! It is a great feeling to get a good thermal and win the prize of a great flight.

If you want your Vista to REALLY fly, try putting a brushless motor in there and get all that led out of it. I use a KD A22-20L motor with a 30A ESC and 2200mAh 3 cell LiPo and an 11X6 folding prop and it flies great. Goes up really fast and finds thermals great instead of flying through them. My motor run is like 20 seconds and I am UP there and finding thermals is easier without all that weight in there. Once you get in one, it will go up faster too. I have had 45 min flights with mine and I love it. My only problem is, I am better at finding sink then lift, but that is not the gliders fault.

For a plane like the Vista I would recommend a small motor with a large prop and large battery. That way, you keep the costs and weight down for extreme thermalling potential...

My motor cost a whole $17.00 and I don't think you can get much cheaper then that and still fly the plane.
