Does anybody know of a good 3d "scale" airplane kit that would perform well with a YS 140? When I say scale I mean somthing that is not profile. Somthing like an extra 300, yak, edge, ect.. I would like it if this plane was a kit build not an arf if at all possible.

Thanks for any reccomendations,

Mike

Your best airplanes would be:
1. QQ Yak 73"
2. Extreme Flight Yak 74"
The QQ will be the best flyer of the two. Afterall, QQ is the best.
Some excellent 2nd choices would be:
3. Wild Hare 120 size Edge
4. AeroWorks 120 size Yak (This will be the best build, toughest, in the class)
5. TBM Magic Hands Yak 73". (this is an unknown plane but will be a good one based on who is handling it, TBM is an excellent company)
6. Great Planes Sukhoi performance series. This may be a bit too heavy depending on your elevation, but the performance series are as good as they get. Wonderful planes. It would be the biggest of all these listed. I think a YS 140 would be a great choice if you're at low elevation. Here's a link: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRXR1&P=ML

Anyways, this will give you a starting point.
Thanks
Barry

Another one I just thought of.

The Great Planes Giant UCD. The 140 would pull this plane great. It would weigh less than 12 pounds. This plane is huge. It also is very fun to fly but not as scale as the others. But...whoa! It's fun to fly. Awesome plane.
Thanks
Barry

I second the Aeroworks YAK. I think it is the one to beat in the 1.20 CLASS. The plane is awesome right out of the box.

Are there any of these type of airplanes that are builders kits instead of arfs? They all look really nice but I am looking for a kit build. Would a great planes ultimate bipe do 3d well? I have had one of those on the shelve for a long time. (not for 140)

Slowglow,
The CA Model Epsilon 1.20 is the only builders kit that I had considered for my YS 1.40. After weighing in the covering and glue, I bought the QB YAK 54 90-120 from Aeroworks. I still might grab one of these though. Check out the video for the plane. Here is my 1.40 when I was finishing the YAK.

I am building the Lanier Extra 300 1/4 scale 72" wingspan. Its an older kit that builds a bit on the heavy side when according to plan. However, being a kit it leaves room for any change desired including remove some weight.
Allthough never a true 3D flier due wing area I still belive it will 3D fairly with some diet and enlarged controlsurfaces. Check out the build thread. My est finished weight 11,5 lbs and OS200FS should give it enough oumph...

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys! These planes look great. I think that the funtana would be the best for 3-d. Am I right? Any more suggestions? Is the 140 a popular size for 3d? Thanks again guys!

slow...
When I saw Steve's post up there it reminded me that he has a Funtana (one of the original Yellow ones) with a YS140. It's actually a great set up for the 140. Also I have another friend that has the same plane with a Saito 180 which flys excellent. The Funtana builds a lot heavier than they say and is usually tail heavy. I think most of them are above 10lbs. Mine weighed 9lbs 6ozs with a YS 110. And it was way tail heavy. But with a beefed up landing gear, a larger engine (like your YS 140) it could be a great 3D plane. Just another plane with food for thought. I'm surprised Steve didn't mention it.

Good luck with your choice...oh and by the way...the YS 140 is an excellent engine for 3D.

thanks
Barry
