You could turn your computer to sleep mode.

I turn my screen brightness down (because I don't like a really bright screen)

Lol while I agree that would be nice to cut down on energy, I think it will give me a headache.

I will also set my homepage to that instead of google. Although I fear the amount of time I leave my computer on isn't so nice . Also, the mindset that the planet is doomed so why should I care I disagree with, I won't get into the details, but I think technology can always grow.

Our household ( Girl and I ) made the switch to Jute bags some time ago. When we moved in to this apartment, all the bulbs were the " Energy Saving " kind, except for 4 lamps, which we bought.

We still use the large black garbage bin bags, but thats about it.

No idea if one house makes a differience, but its a start atleast.

Heck if everyone did what you are doing, the world would be a better place...

I made a simple test html page that's black with white words (sorry I did it in a hurry so there's probably some misspelled words in it)

Although I'm not completely sold on the fact that we as humans are the cause of global warming, I do believe we are "wasting" the planet of its natural resources slowly but surely

In order to make a change at the world-wide level our lifestyles would have to be 100% eco-friendly and we would have to do it subconsciously

If you ban plastic then you need more paper. If you have to wash out your trash can then you use more water. There is no "green" way of doing things unless you want to revert back to the stone age. I want my modern conveniences, and my freedom to choose should not be taken away because of alot of bad science that says we have "warming issues"! I use good ol' fashion 100W bulbs when possible cause I like to have plenty of light, besides those low energy bulbs make less light and don't last as long as they say they do. Its not that I think we should just dump toxins in rivers and throw trash in the streets, its just that it shouldn't effect the way I run my life.

Not to mention the extra plastic bottles from dish soap that you'd throw away from using more of it so you can wash out your trash can.

This is like everybody telling me i need to go buy a NEW prius and trade in my gas hog Jeep. Yes, I'd like to buy another vehicle for almost 20,000 more than I owe on my Jeep so I can save $200 a month on gas, pay more for insurance, and drive a car that takes more natural resources to build than a Suburban. Where do I sign up?

Maybe when they come out with the Prius with a Cummins 16v 4BT with Rockwell axles I'll consider it

Aside from plastic bags, there are other considerations that we westerners can take to help curb environmental pollution. And of course, pollution is global, not localized to one country, so one poluting country will make it miserable for other countries as well.

Some of the other things that westernes can do is not be wasteful. I mean each person can do their part and still live confortably. For example, if you can walk or ride a bike somewhere, do so instead of driving. That curbs fuel consumption, aqnd if everyone with a car did so, it can actaully help global fuel consumption and the resulting pollution. Every RPM of the engine that is not turned is fuel that is not burned and pollution that is not ejected in the atmosphere. Also, carpooling heklps alot especially during rush hour. less cars in gridlock means smoother flowuing traffic which in turn means less time each car is idling burning fuel in stop and go traffic. Mass transit is also an option. If your city or town has a decent busing system, by all means use it.

Another thing we westeners can do is not buy so much crap we do not really need. What I mean is stick to one hobby, dont try to entertain 3 or 4 at one time. So, buy an RC, and give up some other more expensive hobby. Those good require energy and materials to make, fuel to load into ships, trains, trucks, airplanes to get to the stores, etc. So, if you only run RCs, you are not contributing to environmental pollution for placing demand on somthing that you might not even have time for anyways.

Additionally, pay attention to where your stuff is made from. For example, if it is made in the Canada or US, those goods were made under strict environmental laws, whereas if it came from some 3rd world country, chances are that country has poor environemtal protection laws so the makers probaly polluted indescriminatly to make those goods. If Americans made the sacrifice to pay more for the goods that are made in America, not only are those goods made under strict EPA laws, but Americans will still have a job. The growing and disturbing trend is that 3rd world manufacturing is so cheap that American manufacturing is being outsoourced overseas to countries with horrid pollution laws and the American workers are being fired.

I am on the side of environmentalists, but for them to make it hard for western manufactures to remain in those respective countries only displaces the pollution to the 3rd world countries. Those countris in turn pollute the atmosphere, the oceans, and that polution comes back or blose over the western countries anyways. The environemtalists should also encourage and make it viable for the manufacturing to stay in the west so those manufacturers can make goods and not pollute. My solution or suggestion requires legal/political action, but I will not go into that, this is not the place to discuss that.

I think I will call up all my friends, have them pack up their SUVs with protest signs and drive to the capital to protest the wasting of resources.

Since everybody lives all over town, we are going to drive separtately so we don't waste fuel driving all over town picking each other up

I like the system I saw in use in super-markets in Germany when I went there last year. Instead of having free plastic shopping bags, they each cost a few cents. You could buy paper bags for the same price too, and they sold nice cloth bags that you reuse that where relatively cheap. Most people there just remember to bring a cloth bag since it saves them money over the plastic or paper bags.

All these things can be done on small scale, especially cloth bags. Is cool if a few supermarkets do it, but if everyone strarted there would be a shortage of cloth and alot of angry sheep In england it has become compulsary for most shops to charge people for their plastic bags but you just pay and waste your money and their not even enviromentaly friendly bags

I do my bit by buying energy saving lights, recycling et. but i blow it all when something happens to my nitro truck, I have to drive to my UNLOCAL LHS which is 70 miles away.
These hybrid cars do not provide much better economy than a average 6 cylinder and they are worse than 4 cylinder cars which can easily outperform them. They are also worse for the enviroment to build. Electric cars are just as bad unless you know your electricity is coming from a renewable source. We should just wait for the arrival of hydrogen cars, or the weird cars that run on air (which they have started selling in UK)

For the blackle.com thing, the watt hours thing it is showing is completly wrong. It doesnt know wheather your using a CRT, LCD, OLCD (new sony tv only availbe in Japan) or plasma or what size the screen is.
All screens except OLCD use near to full electricity when the screen is black because the pixals are still turned on. However OLCD is the only screen which allows the pixals to be fully turned off which provides a better contrast ratio and saves electricity. OLCD is only a concept from Sony right now (but is sold in Japan), but will be on sale next year probably.

Not really, if everyone made a little change it would make a difference.

And geez on the blackle.com, they are trying, maybe the exact number of watt hours saved is al ittle less, but at least they make a difference.
