Personally I think that there are more important issues that should be address that hit closer to home. Have you ever been on an Indian Reservation? I have many times.

I'm sure there are several members here that have visited reservations, myself included. That is not the point of this thread, however. Regardless of other issues which may have differing importance to each of us, the subject at hand is attempting to reduce and reuse.

Please don't convolute the thread by entering into other discussions. This is a tricky enough subject to keep alive without treading into policy-violating territory. We're damned close now.

Thank you.

Why dont you guys all make a start by breaking your rc cars to pieces and recycling the precious metals and plastics they contain so that they can go to a worthier cause
Afterall, it is just a hobby right?

You can make a difference in other ways than destroying what you enjoy doing on your own free time.

JMO, but it seems like apathy is just as big a problem as what's being discussed here. Kinda sad really.

I agree, Rob. Many people just figure everything will go on just fine for themselves, and thus what's the problem? There are so many little details about the manner in which I run my life and home that I have changed in recent years to which I have subsequently become accustomed, that I now pay so much more attention to the world around me and what others are doing. At work, there are many who have been here for decades, and in their view things do not need to change or be improved upon. It makes me sad.

I really can identify with your point, and Foxy's feelings as well.

American 4x4 do use up a lot of gasoline but I agree with you Longhair. Why do the greenpeace people sometimes attack 4x4 which have a high miles per gallon count, such as mercedes, bmw and nissan 4x4's

No more than a Japanese 4x4 (4runner, Pajero) or an English 4x4 ($95,000 for a freakin Range Rover? WHO'S wasteful? PFFT)

My Jeep gets better fuel economy than my mom's TWO WHEEL DRIVE 4runner did or her TWO WHEEL DRIVE Toyota Sequoia does.
Don't blame American 4x4s for something that anything that is built like a TRUCK does. My stepfather's Tacoma 4x2 gets worse gas mileage than my dad's Chevy Colorado 4x4.
the Pathfinders are AWFUL on gas
Remember, we Americans can't get diesel Japanese and Euro SUVs here in the States.

Also, there is more money raised to save land for the future by we American off-road enthusiasts than the environmentalists.

Yes, pollution is a problem, but when you start blaming Joe Blow with his well-maintained 14 mpg Jeep that gets driven maybe 5,000 miles a year instead of your average environmentalist who probably drives a poorly maintained '91 Subaru Loyale with bad rings so it leaves a nice trail of blue smoke everywhere they go driving 25,000 miles a year because they want to picket, you need to take your blinders off. Yeah, it gets 30 mpg in GAS, but it gets about 100 miles to the QUART OF OIL, too...

THERE IS NO ONE SINGLE CAUSE of pollution, and it's EVERYBODY'S fault. Don't single out American 4x4s simply because of the poster child H2 (which gets THE SAME fuel economy as the Range Rover).

Proof that the American SUV is the cause for the decline of society...

The new hybrid tahoe gets 21 mpg, and there are no full size anythings from outside the US that can do that. That's the same mileage as a 4 cyl camry. We have the answers to stop alot of energy use, but alot of people think that it has to be here NOW! I took us almost a decade to reach the moon and that was with the full backing of the country.

The new Camry 4 cylinder is well rated above 21 mpg combined driving. The Tahoe will not get above 20 mpg highway. Not much of an acheivement if you ask me.

A 6,000lb fullsize truck getting 21mpg is not an achievement?

Every thread related to any type of environmental subject seems to rail on into gas mileage. We have two similar threads in the OT to support a mileage discussion, so let's continue this vein elsewhere, shall we?

The 21mpg is city. If you dont think a 6,000lb V8 truck with 330hp that gets the same city mileage as a 3000lb 4 cylinder, what would impress you?

The Tahoe is rated 20 city/ 21 Highway. Imo thats pretty darn good for such a big vehicle, especially one with that much power, and one that can tow 6000lbs.

Getting more back to environmetal issues, pollution, but also tied to burning fossil fuels, There have been the idea by several businesses and even school districts to going to longer 4day school/work weeks instead of the standard 5day work/school week. This I think is a good idea; it spares students and work commuters one day's worth of driving. So, assuming one only goes to and from work/school (like I do since it is too expensive now to do much else), the fuel expenditire for the week is cut by 20% (or maybe more like 10-15% for most others). This would be especially effective for big cities with traffic congestion problems, these big cities will see a significant amount of polution reduced during rush hour. The schools/businesses can rotate the day off during the week to help further alleviate the traffic load and the grid lock and therfore fule expenditure and pullotion generated.

Another idea is to staggar when people go to work and school. I find it stupid that most businesses and schools insist on the 8-5 and 9-6 work-school shifts. There should be more shifts as well: a 6-3, 7-4, and maybe also a 10-7. That way, the roads are less prone to congestion, less pollution form idling cars, and less lost time for each person. Now, for the 4x10hr work day, simply add 2 hours to each of these shifts.

I\'m not saying these changes should be forced on everyone, but make it available for those who want such shifts. That way, those who do choose them can possible help with reducing fuel consumption and pollution.

As I said before, mass transit and car pooling should be highly encouraged, especially since most businesses, schools, and poeple/students would be at first less inclined to take them. But, by giving someone the chance to take an alternate workshift so he avoids rush hour might be insentive enough to work different hours.
