Getting more back to environmetal issues, pollution, but also tied to burning fossil fuels, There have been the idea by several businesses and even school districts to going to longer 4day school/work weeks instead of the standard 5day work/school week. This I think is a good idea; it spares students and work commuters one day's worth of driving. So, assuming one only goes to and from work/school (like I do since it is too expensive now to do much else), the fuel expenditire for the week is cut by 20% (or maybe more like 10-15% for most others). This would be especially effective for big cities with traffic congestion problems, these big cities will see a significant amount of polution reduced during rush hour. The schools/businesses can rotate the day off during the week to help further alleviate the traffic load and the grid lock and therfore fule expenditure and pullotion generated. Another idea is to staggar when people go to work and school. I find it stupid that most businesses and schools insist on the 8-5 and 9-6 work-school shifts. There should be more shifts as well: a 6-3, 7-4, and maybe also a 10-7. That way, the roads are less prone to congestion, less pollution form idling cars, and less lost time for each person. Now, for the 4x10hr work day, simply add 2 hours to each of these shifts. I\'m not saying these changes should be forced on everyone, but make it available for those who want such shifts. That way, those who do choose them can possible help with reducing fuel consumption and pollution. As I said before, mass transit and car pooling should be highly encouraged, especially since most businesses, schools, and poeple/students would be at first less inclined to take them. But, by giving someone the chance to take an alternate workshift so he avoids rush hour might be insentive enough to work different hours.
