Ive always wondered how a Pneumatic chair works. you know, those office chairs where you lift the lever to go up (ssssssssssssssshhhhhhhh) and lift the lever again- now using your body weight- to go down. (ppppppppppppsssssssss)
Anyone care to enlighten me?

Piston on a spring. When you lift the lever, it opens a valve in the piston chamber. Your bodyweight is enough to compress the spring, and in doing so the air escapes through the open valve. When you press the lever without your bodyweight on the chair, it opens the valve just the same, but the energy from the spring pushes the chair up, filling the piston with air coming in again through the valve. When you release the lever, the valve is closed and the piston rests on the air inside, hence the slightly springy feeling.

Hope that helps!

cool thanks makes sense.. ive always thought that inside of the mechanism had like weird chemicals that expand and.....well you get my point

turns out it was much more simpler than that.

ive always wondered, i thought yer weight just compressed the air inside, and the lever released a lock of some kind, always wondered how no air escaped

I loved those chairs when I was young. I was light back then so I could sit on the chair and pull the lever and it would lift me up! Getting back down was difficult though
