I have a chance to get a set of Sig hollow glass floats at a very reasonal price, the ones that came with the non-fuel proof paint. I can re-paintno prablem, my question is-is there any reason to fill them with foam, the kind that comes in a can?

Don't. The pressure of the foam expanding can burst the floats and if you get water in them the foam doesn't let you get it out.

I built a RC boat for my son once and foamed the inside. The foam swelled enough to cause noticeable distortion of the hull, but did not split it.

There are now "low expansion" versions of the canned foam.

Still, I agree with Evan. Those floats are robust enough and the foam will only add weight. Just be sure you cknow how to fab a drain plug if they ever leak.

Hi Jim, thanks for your in-put. Any suggestions on installing a drain plug would be welcome. Joe

One I have seen that worked well:
silver-Solder a #10-24 nut to a washer. Figure out where that will fit and drain best, and drill a 1/4" hole in the center of that area. Epoxy the nut/washer assembly centered over the hole. Then plug the hole in the nut with a small 10-24 machine screw and a rubber gasket.

Drill a small hole in the top of the float and simply put some RTV over it. If you get water in the float peel it off drain then put RTV back over it.

I just bought a couple drain plugs from an Aquacraft boat, drilled a couple holes and installed them.

Hey-I have a set of great planes fiberglass floats and I was going to fill them with foam as they have a tendancy to crack. Once the water is in the wood soaks it up and they get heavy too- has anyone tried foam with success? I thought if I layered it in slow and in several steps this would work and I thought that should keep the water out? These floats seem to get a crack just about every time they are in the water.
