Well today I did more carving, sanding, and puttying than I have on this entire project combined. :-)

Forgetting (or just trying to ignore) how the vertical stabilizer blends with the fuselage kinda caught me off guard. It was not difficult it has just taken me almost the whole weekend to get the entire tail section shaped!

Anyway, here is an image of the roughed out tail ready for a final pass over with some 220 grit. I used some auto filler because I didn't want it cracking and balsa filler doesn't lend itself very well to these situations.

More to come!

Mike-
I encountered the same thing wth the tail on my Skyshark Stuka. I don't think I wanna' know how many hours I spent smoothing it out!

I got a couple of things done this weekend.... There is nothing pretty about the plane at this point... Just a bunch of putty, primer, and wood shavings.. :-)

1. Got the tail feathers all hinged up and ready for final sanding.
I'll hit them with 320 grit paper and get everything smooth... You can also see the rough opening for the scale tailwheel location in this picture.

2. Worked on smoothing the gun deck to fuselage joint. I just let the primer help me get this joint smooth. After I glass the bird I'll smooth this area once more.

Next is mounting the engine mount and cowl. Then just a bunch of final sanding/filling/sanding before we glass the fuselage.

See you soon!

Ok guys... Did a little more work tonight.

1. Trimmed the from of the fuselage and measured the engine so I could fit the cowl. Gonna try and make it as flush as possible.
I still have to cut out the cooling vents on the side of the fuse.

2. Also did some initial cutting and fitting of the canopy pieces.

WOW! It's starting to look like a 190!

Till Next time!

Looking great Mike!

I'm sure you know that the 190A had a big fan in front of the engine but,... I've thought that a dummy radial (like the one Top Flight makes for their .60 sized Corsair) would look pretty great stuck in behind that cowl opening. And then place a scratch built dummy fan over the front of the dummy radial. The set up would also provide a nice looking baffle for cooling. Anyway, just a thought.

The model looks great, nice work!

Thanks for the kind words....

Yeah... I've got a dummy radial and I was going to construct a dummy fan for it. I think it will really enhance the apprearance.

I've decided on an O.S. .61FX because the plane is going to be so light and I can cowl it up 100% so the dummy engine and fan will help me hide all the baffling. The fuselage is almost ready to glass as soon as I cut the exaust vents in the sides.

WOW I just noticed... This thread has 209 post in it! Thanks for everyone's contribution to this project so far!

Now that sounds like some fun!!!! However, we don't have to wait on this bird to go fly. Pick an afternoon and we'll go!

I'll still grease that Zero...

Give me a call sometime and we'll go!
Mike

Mike, I know you were making great progress early on. As you said, its really starting to look like a FW190. Looks great!
How much time do you think you've got into this kit so far?

Darren

Darren,

I've got about 60 hours into it at this point. I estimate I am about 70% of getting it ready to finish.

Thanks,
Mike
