I was flying my Super Star this evening and was wayyyy out and the engine quit and knew I was in deep do do, brought it in the best I could and got to the fence line which is grown up with small trees and briars but just couldn't make it over so pulled up as hard as I could and heard the terrible sounds of a crash, then the dreaded walk to pick up the remains. I climbed over the fence and BEHOLD, there was my plane tangled in a tree and thorns, Dad helped me pull it out and not one scratch. Don't tell me there is no God! Happy Fathers Day to all. Hamman

How do you like the Super Star? I've got one that is about 75% finished. I put it aside because I am somewhat leary of it... not sure. I don't know why, though, as you can see from the below list, I am not afraid to fly some big planes, just that this one has an OS 1.60 FX engine and an 18 inch prop. A big step up from a 1.20 AX and a 15-10 prop, for sure.

But, I am interested in how it handles and how it lands. I've been told that it is a bit squirrely on landings if the speed is not kept up (tip stall).

On a related story to yours, I had a Sig Little Something Extra electric conversion that I was going to fly one day, after flying my other planes. The others were on the 2.4 GHz Spektrum system where the LSE was on Airtronics RD8000 72 MGz channel 11. Well, I put it up and started to trim and it began to fly strangely.. then I lost all control but throttle, which I immediately cut to 0.. then lost complete control. It drifted on over the trees in the woods and went down.

I feared the worst when I walked out to where I thought it might be.. and there it was. Sitting on the ground, with only a broken prop. Wphew. And the cause? Well, after flying the bigger planes on the 2.4 GHz system, and that short antenna, well, I simply forgot to raise the TX antenna for my 72 MHz system. Duh!!! But, no damage..

CGr

Thanks all!

Yes it was my lucky day, we must enjoy those cuz it doesn't always work out how the way would like sometimes.

CGr,
I did the same with this plane, I had it a year before I finished it. I was sitting on the fence because I couldn't decide to use a glow or gas engine. I went with a BCMA 26 gasser and it pulls it around just fine. My AUW is 11.5 lb with 14 oz of gas.

I fly this plane a lot and really like it for sport-aerobatic flying. You do have to land it a little hot but its nothing to be scared of. I think it just needs to be built as light as possible, I started out at over 12 lbs and just getting rid of 8oz helped a lot. I would reinforce the landing gear area, some of the early ones were weak in that area. There are 2 threads on the Super Star that are worth checking out if you haven't allready done that.

I like this plane well enough I purchased a spare just incase the next tree eats it instead of saving it! By the way the carb bolts worked loose causing the dead stick, a little lock tight and it was flying again last eve. Hamman

Good morning.

Thanks for the input and the confidence builder.

Actually, I do fly larger planes, and the pattern planes are somewhat slippery so they come in rather hot, but they tend to float because they are both rather light for their size (Venus II and Excelleron 90, both with OS 1.20 AX). The Super Star is somewhat larger and the engine is definitely on the large size.

In order to get the engine to fit correctly, I removed the center section from the muffler. The OS 1.60 FX has a long muffler with a center section that is removable, so I took it out. The pressure nipple is still behind the baffle so there will be plenty of tank pressure.. I hope.

The other thing about this plane is that it has the rear control surface servos mounted back aft. I was planning on putting in pull-pull rudder to more center up the weight, but will leave the two elevator servos back aft. Actually, all I really need to do is to put in the linkage for the elevator controls, then the rudder cables, and then reinforce the aileron setup (I don't like what the setup is now, so I am going to change it by providing a hard point for the torque arms on each aileron). I am using 4-40 hardware and the Spektrum servos that came with the radio (high torque "digital" servos" .

Other than that, this plane is ready to fly. I could just put my mind to it and finish it up and take it out. The Goldberg Tiger 120 is actually larger than the Super Star, but not nearly as capable, so it isn't the size that spooks me..

Thanks again for the input. Good suggestions and recommendations, by the way. I will reinforce the landing gear.. not sure if it is a new one or an older one, but I will just put a bit more stock down there to hold things together.

I will let you know how things turn out once I do finish it.

CGr.
