Folks,

I need some help. About a year ago I restored an old 1/3 scale WWI BUSA Sopwith Pup and have been flying her regularly. Well as things happen I finally had a bad landing with that rigid gear and broke it.

I would like to put a somewhat scale sprung gear on here, but the metal work is way past my abilities. I have the original plans and am willing to get whatever elses is needed, pay for parts and a fair cost for labor. Would any of you be willing, or know someone that would weld up a gear substructure for me. I can do all the wood and finish work. Thanks - Steve, Yuma, AZ

How would Cub gear from the 40's look on a Sopwith Pup from the late teens?

too far away to offer to weld up the gear for you . basically it has the 2 legs[on one side ] come together at the bottom where the axle is , i put a piece of 1/8" brass plate triangle shape s/soldered -hard stuff not cheap soft stuff- the plate has a slot cut in it axle diam clearance size it to have the axle go up & down about 1-1/4 travel space . across the bottom of the fork a straight music wire is s/soldered across -about 1-1/2 " long , around this one puts some 1/8 or 3/16 bungee cord to hold the axle down . so when in use the bungee holds the axle & allowas to go up & down .

Hey Splais,

Have you looked at the gear on my 1/3rd scale Sopwith Tripe? The first page has pictures of the gear and the last pages have several flight videos. Check out the spring in the gear, it works great. A buddy of mine built the gear for me and I might be able to get him to make you a set (Not sure what the charge would be). I can email him and ask. I am in Germany right now but will return in August (in time for the Muncie Dawn Patrol!) Let me know if you are interested. Here is the link to my thread.
