After many wonderful flights, I managed to plant my Kadet Senior into the ground, nose first. Everything in front of the side windows is trash (lots of itty-bitty bits), but originally I thought the rest of the fuse was in pretty good shape. Today I REALLY looked at the fuse and feel it would be faster to just rebuild it as trying to meld a new front end with the rest of the fuse and keep it square and in-line might be next to impossible (even with the plans). However, the main wing was salvagable and I think the empenage is salvagable. The impact ripped the elevator right off the horizontal stab (pulled the "cloth" off the hinges).

What I need help with is: 1) How do you get the rest of the hinge out?
2) Since I will be recovering the rudder and vertical stab, should I cut the rudder off at the hinges and do the same repair as the elevator, or just try to recover them as they are (attached)?

I also decided to send the flight pack off to Radio South to make sure everything is OK. It still worked fine, but the impact broke the servo rails free of the fuse, split them in half and busted 2 of the 3 servo arms. I'd rather be safe than sorry here.

I loved this Senior as it was my first kit, and I had added barn door ailerons, wing bolts and made it a tail dragger. Definatley worth the work to have it back .

Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

I have cut the hinges at the hinge line before, and just staggered the new hinges between the old ones, and I have also just sliced new hinge slots right next to the old ones without problems. I am not sure if that is as strong or not......... as for your fuselage I can't say whether you should start from scratch..but I know quite a few guys that sheet all the way up to the wing, and back behind it as well. They remove the clear windows and just fake them in with stickers. Supposedly it makes the plane much stronger and it still flies like a kite...

Sorry to hear about your crash. I have a Kadet Senior with the same modifications done to it! It is definetaly a plane worth rebuilding!!!
A few other things I have on mine that you may be interested in is reinforcing the firewall back to the wing with sheeting or using a harder wood besides balsa for the fuselage main beams. I also outfitted mine with wider/taller landing gear with the largest cub wheels/tires I could find, I currently have a O.S.91FS for the power but am considering switching that out for the BME .90cu gasoline engine. It is definately a plane made for EXTRA rough field take offs and landings. Cross wind landings are a blast with the big tires!

I would be happy to take some pictures of mine and send them to you if you need any inspiration for your build.

Thanks foodstick, I will give that a try. I did reinforce the fuse below and behind the windows, which is why that part of the fuse is OK. Unfortunately, the top part of the canopy (where the wing attaches) area is toast.

Blade-breaker, yep, I also have a taller and wider landing gear with BIG wheels which made for easy landings. Mine had an OSFS70 Surpass II in it and was my slow flyer. All pictures are appreciated, but I am on dial-up, so please make sure they are sized appropriately I will look at using better balsa in the front next time and hopefully won't have to find out if it helps.

Appreciate the help folks!
