This afternoon shortly after I left our field a fellow clubmember had a serious heart attack. If it weren't for the fact that a couple of the people who were present, who knew CPR, he would be dead by now. The ambulance arrived within 10 minutes and he was off to the hospital.
Now you should be asking yourselves: " Is my club prepared for just such an emergency"?
Do have member(s) present who know CPR? If not then maybe it's time to get a member to volunteer to attend classes.
This person is still not out of danger, BUT, he is still alive and his chances for survival were greatly increased by the fact that people were there who could help.
Be prepared. Who knows one of us could be next.

I agree, that is a very scary situation. At our field by the pin board and out by the road on the sign is the Fire #, and our location to tell our location. As for the whole getting cut or something we have a first aid kit, now, if someones finger was severely cut by a prop I'm sure another member would gladly drive him out to the hospital or get needed attention ; thats the thing w/ our club, everyone is their to help eachother out, and IMO thats one feature that makes a great club. As far as CPR, I assume (but, you know what assume means) that a least 1 or 2 people know. That might be something to bring up to our club safety officer @ the next meeting.

My club is truly fortunate. We are in a national park and there are park police who are CPR certified. In addition there is a NYC Police aviation unit located there. They are also CPR certified. In our club we have several of NY's Finest (Police) and Bravest (Fire) as members. Lastly there are a few club members who are CPR certified, I am one of them.
Happy landings, Tony.

BLS would be a good idea for everyone, but it won't happen. Luckily for your friend there were trained people there, but it could have been otherwise. Maybe he could have been alone at the field (not a good practice regardless of health) or maybe the others there may not have known what to do. Most you can hope for is a cellphone and 911. We have our GPS coordinates posted at the pin board, and we keep a first aid kit for cuts and the like, but having every contingency covered is for the most part impractical. Our local VFD chief (he's a paramedic) lives right at the north end of our runway, next to the gate to the field. Best of circumstances? Who's to say when he's home or not, so take your chances.

I hope your friend recovers.

So have you signed up for a CPR/AED class since then?

I may have to sign up for classes and or find out who is trained. One of our clubmembers is retired CG.
UpDate: A week ago Thursday, the member passed away. . The autopsy found he had extremely low levels of potassium and was also a diabetic. This then was the obvious cause of his collapse. My mother also collapsed from low potassium but recovered.
Obviously it was not a heart attack as was previously mentioned from the info I was given from clubmembers.
He left behind a young family and a great many friends throughout the country.
He will be missed.
