I would think that engine would easily turn an X440/3...though I would expect more than 35 MPH out of the X437/3. I would have expected at least mid 40s.

What pipe are you using? Did you cut it or the header at all?? I don't know what the tuned length is supposed to be on that engine, but it looks long in the video. I think the .21 CMB in my kids mono is set at 9 inches...but would need to double check.

Andy Brown is having a father's day special on his .21 pipes that are made for 180 degree headers (in other words, they are shorter pipes)...I think it ends today though. http://www.intlwaters.com/index.php?showtopic=27149

I have the macs tuned pipe 3.5/.19-.35. I have not cut the pipe or manifold. Would cutting the pipe or manifold increase speed? The pressure fitting is 6 & 5/8 inches from the center of the piston.

CHANGE THE TURN FIN TO A GRIMFIN AN DIAL OUT SOME RUDDER ON YOU TRANSMITTER, MORE PROP!!!!, PIPE LENGTH ABOUT 8.5 TO 9.5 " MEASURE AROUND THE CURVE OF THE HEADER TO WIDEST PART OF THE PIPE, I USE A PIECE OF STIFF WIRE TO MEASURE , THEN CUT HEADER PIPE TO SIZE.

Getting your tuned pipe, to the right tuned length, will increase speed. If you listen to the other videos of the Miss Vegas with the .21 OS in them, the boats are screaming.

You need to measure starting at the center of the plug, down the center of the header all the way around the bend, down the center of the tuned pipe, to the fat part of the pipe.

is it bad the way I'm running it now? Like for my engine or anything? Just want to know out of curiosity. When I cut it, is it best to cut off the pipe or header, and how much should I cut off to start with? I'm thinking about 1/8 inch increments? I really appreciate the help. this is my first nitro boat, leaving electric for good!

Thanks, Aaron

aaron,

its not that it is bad for your engine if your pipe and header are too long,
it will cause exactly the results you are getting now, low speed of 35mph, engine not singing/screaming.

if you don't fix or tune your pipe to the proper lenght for best performance you will not be able to do any better than what you are getting now, you won't be able to spin any other props.

here is a crude drawing to help you out.

Dan.

When I first got back in the hobby, I was not a believer...I was using a mousse can muffler on my little A-rigger. Then I put a MACS pipe on it...and it took off like a rocket. The difference was huge.

Again, I don't know what length your pipe is supposed to be, but it just seemed long in the pic. Have you measured it yet (per Dan's instructions)?? If so, how long is the tuned length of your exhaust??

Sean

Hey DAN that's a great drawing, I'll bet he's at 10" or so with the curved header, let us know Aaron.

I would hate to be wrong...and probably ought to recommend the usual thing (taking off a quarter inch at a time until you get close)...but my GUESS is that you are about 2 inches from a good starting point. IE I think you are going to wind up around 9 inches or less. So my GUESS would be that if you are currently 11.5 inches from center of cylinder to widest part of the pipe...taking 2 inches off...getting you to 9.5 inches...would be a world of difference in your boat.

I have zero experience with the OS engine...and just a little with my .21 CMB...so wait till you get some other inputs before you start sawing...heh.

aaron,

like Sean said, cut 1/4" at a time.
all together if you have a brand new header you may end up with approx 3/4" removed on the header (depends how long the header is, you may be able to remove a bit more) and the rest on the pipe.

I have a feeling your final result will be around 8.5 to 9"

remember it is cheaper to replace a header than a pipe. Also keep enough play that you can adjust the pipe later on and you should be able to do so without any more cutting.

example: if 8.5 is the sweet spot, ensure you can adjust from 8.5 to 8" and 8.5 to 9", you see what I mean?
your keeping yourself 1/2" both ways.

to contact Jerry or Russ just send them a PM.

Dan.

I pm'd Jerry Dunlap and he said the tuned length should be 8.25 to 8.5. I cut mine to 9.75. I figured id start with that. (and my my silicone tube for my exhaust is only so long.) I took it out earlier today and after my 3rd straight away i spun it out because i dont have a good turnfin. My engine cut out and when i retrieved it the coupler was off, i then realized the engine was seized, i took the head off and i cracked my piston and there was chunks of metal on top of my piston . I'm pretty sure i over rev'd it, and i was just wondering what you guys think. Did this happen because i cut my pipe or was it just a coincidence? I didnt take the rest of it apart yet who thats all i know happened.

I don't think shortening the pipe would blow the engine.

I didn't think so but it was weird that on its first run after I cut the pipe I blew the engine.

I dont think the pipe being shorter is any more likely to blow your engine than it being long.

Did it suck in some water?? Water does not compress to well.

If you blew your coupler, that means you also ran lean...loss of pressure to the tank would lean up the engine.

Anyhow...so how was the difference in how it ran before the spinout/blown engine?? Did it really wake it up??

I blew an engine a quarter lap into my first run of the day once. Pretty sure I had damaged it the last time I had it out...I had flipped it a couple times and probably sucked in some water...just some food for thought.

Sean

Sounds like a combo of over rev and lean mixture in the spinout alright.

I'm glad to see that my pipe length wasn't to far off (8.5).

aaron,

ensure you get yourself spare exhaust couplers and that you secure them at each end with zip ties.

Learn to listen to the sound of your engine, a change of sound will tell you that something has changed, coupler is off or coupler has split/cracked, or bearing is going etc.etc..

that way you can slow down and bring her back in preventing any damage. you fix the problem (if you can on the spot) and carry on.
now make sure you take the whole engine apart, check everything over, bearings, conrod etc

Dan.

my exhaust coupler didnt fall off. what fell off is the thing that connects the flex cable to the flywheel, probably because my engine seized so it spun off. and i didnt notice much of a difference, it wasnt running long enough for me to really tell.

Sorry,

miss read, I tough it was the exhaust coupler. Still, even if the engine stopped suddenly the collet should not spin off (I have seized a few engine).

having your pipe at 9 3/4" is still about 1 1/4" too long and that makes a big difference performance wise.

Dan.

Man my CMB is is 125!! This is the reason why I'm not a fan of these motors like O.S CMB,Nova,OPS the Parts on them are to costly!! But there are fast when you get them dial in. If you planning to races then you can get these motor. But if your just playing around for sport and fun you have to go with the cheaper/low cost motors. I'd been hearing alot about the Go motors. I'm willing to try one of there.21 race motors. But first I'll check the parts pricing list to see how costly there parts are?
