As per the title, I'm wondering how long bearings last for on a nitro engine?
Especially in OS engines, (OS 15CV-R)

most likely they will self-destruct moments after you replace the piston and sleeve..........

Seriously, I'd like to see an answer on this as well................

Id expect at least 3 to 4 gallons

I don't know about ceramics though, I just put a set in an LRP .28 that the steel bearings went out on the start of gallon 5,

It all depends on how you run your engines and care for them.

Slayerphonics.....are you saying that bearings don't last as long as a piston/sleeve? Cuz I thought a piston/sleeve would last longer than 3-4 gallons (if cared for as hrdcoreglf says).

I must be on the net too much........havn't actually worn an engine out yet......

Your piston and sleeve should out last the bearings, The LRP I put the ceramics in still had mechanical pinch in it.

And how do you know when the bearings need replacing?
And what kind of care? I see if the oil level is low they'd wear out faster, but heat etc wouldn't really affect them would it?

You'll know when bearings go by this.

Tuning is inconsistent.
Higher then normal temps.
Carb, vibrating off.
Sometimes you can hear the rod hitting the bottom of the case.

You can also wiggle your shaft up and down and see it there is play in it. should be no play side to side.

Ya thats kinda typical time to replace. 4 to 5 gallons.

How long are your ceramics lasting?

Are ceramics better?

When my crank is out, if I spin the bearings with my finger, they feel a little bit gritty
Not much, but it's not a completely smooth rotation either

I do have these though:
Tuning is inconsistent.
Higher then normal temps.
Carb, vibrating off.

But I am thinking there might be an air leak... from the bearings? Is that possible?
Last few times I run the car, the amount of oil everywhere is crazy.
after a couple of tanks it's literally dripping off of the car
But the whole engine is covered in oil so it's hard to tell where from. That's why I am thinking maybe the bearings and hence the engine rotation is splattering it everywhere which is why the whole engine is covered in it

Yup its time to replace the bearings.

Could be the coupler from the header to the pipe, that always sprays my engine if it goes bad.

It's not the coupler...
It's weird, even the carb gets covered in oil and it's high up
I'm gonna do a leak test but I am pretty sure it's the bearings

OS plane engines have a reputation for losing the rear bearing when the cage breaks but hopefully the car engines use better quality bearings. Decent bearings should last the lifetime of the engine if they're fed the right oil and all fuel is burned out of the engine on the last run of the day to avoid rust. The bearings in my son's Mach 28 were perfect after 40 hours running (a bit over 10 gallons) and so was the rod but we use a lot of castor in the fuel.

Fuel spraying out past the front bearing though is an indication of a worn bearing because the actual fuel seal is made by the very close fit of the crankshaft to the crankcase in the area between the carb and the rear bearing. If the bearing goes sloppy then the crankshaft rubs on the crankcase and opens up the clearance letting the crankcase pressure force fuel to the front bearing where it escapes. Even with good bearings this fit can get worn away if dirt gets past the air filter but usually this shows up by having scores around the crankshaft looking down into the inlet port. The front bearing plays no part in sealing the crankshaft.
