QQ planes are not in production anymore ...Chief bought all remaining planes from QQ's aircraft company. Thats why the low prices on the planes they have left. The 101"yak originally was selling for $900.00 at QQ's website

Read all the threads about the Greeves vs MTW performance. But my situation is this. I have a brand new DA-85 serial number 16XX along with a Greeves pipe and 12" header purchased from DA at Joe Nall this past May. So I'll assume that the engine has all the improvements. All for a QQ 101 Yak which I plan to start building soon.

I'm a 3D/Sport (mainly 3D) weekend flyer. I need good mid-range. So should I bite the bullet, sell the Greeves here, do the tunnel mod and put in the MTW RE3? Based on an earlier comment it seemed like a longer header helps the midrange on the Greeves. Anyone know what the best length header is for a Greeves to maximize mid range performance ?

Inquiring minds need to know.....

Here you go guys.I have S/N-11 & 12 DA 85cc on Desert Aircraft Pitts muffler QQ-101" I have posted earlier how I did Mine. Note the tank size and Ryan & I can fly it 3D and some pattern flight and come in with Little less than Half tank...Ryan has flown plane it till he was tired of flying for like 30minutes I'll bet. Landed got it down to a 1/8 tank. I wish REZA would jump in here. Look at my setup. I'm guessing you turned both tanks side ways for the smoke. I'm putting the Skywriter in plane I've been using. I'm all plumbed up and ready to install...
Here is some picks. My plane tracks in a slow roll at slow speeds and plane tracks as well at high speeds. I'm real close on what Reza stated for coupling mix and up lines. Plane is very stable. and easy to 3D and Pattern, Whatever you like.
Lets see if the files aren't to big.

Awesome pictures Seems to me Ryan is having a blast with it!
Sorry, I have been away from RCU for a while.

Your set up looks awesome!
I did not have smoke in mine but side ways sounds good to me!

Let me know if I can help with any questions.
Reza

Reza look at what big tank I have in for gas you think I was flying a 40%. Reza here the space I have to work with and I can and like a little more tail wieght It's real close right now and Ryan would say it's still a little nose haevy. He's like snap if the tail isn't dropping for landing it's nose heavy 3d you know.....Reza I tryied the email you posted here giantrcsupport what ever it was with out looking back Mine is excelr82@charter.net rcgiantsupport it failed....
Reza you have a pic still of your tanks installed laying around. wish I could post a movie and I'm registered in Utube and don't know how.
hope you can help. I could work this out but don't want to use the tunnel really and is no need you know that. Turn both tanks side ways and put the pump where the flight log is in that area and would probbaly be sweet....

What do you think Rez....

Rezagh,

How have you been....? Check out my post 177, can't bring myself to get rid of the Greeves, just yet. Have you any experience with the optimum header length for best mid range with a late serial number DA-85? The stock length is 12". The guy who cut an inch off and you told to add 2 1/2" back would make it 13 1/2". Is that where the Greeves likes to play?

Thanks for any advice here .....

Hi borko1,

When I wrote the manual for the 101, I had no experience with Greve but Quique did have some experience and suggested the cut. I really never did install Greve on my 85 but did install them on my DA150 and had a very hard time to adjust to its throttle transition so I took them out. Then I installed RE3 on my 101 and 85 and felt the throttle transition felt much better. So I proceeded with installing them on my DA170 as well but it didn't feel as good. Then I tried different headers until I hit the jackpot, I did an article on this on F lying G iants. Anyways, make a long story short, I never did any more testing with Greve. It was so off for my taste that I just took them off. Sorry, I really don't know how to help you without speculating since I have no solid test data. All I can tell you I think Greve small diameter can be a factor for its poor throttle transition for us mortals that need smooth transition to be able to 3D. Pros, can fly anything and make them look good, I wish I was one of them.

Call DA and talk to Tony, ask him if anyone has solid data on what would make the Greve to have better throttle transition, that might be your best bet since they sell those on daily basis and have way more contacts and info than me.

I am mostly on F G since thats where I get most questions but feel free to email me at reza@giantrcsupport.com I am also including two videos I did on RE3 and DA 170 subject, you can see the whole article on F G.

Here you go:

Rezagh,
I'm looking at one of these airplanes. I would need some kind of cannister exhaust to be quiet enough for my field. Sounds like to me the Greeves pipe won't work very well. Does the RE3 pipe fit the stock mounts already in the plane or is there a lot of modifications? Is it pretty quiet? Where can you get the RE3 pipe?

If this pipe is easy to install and is quiet I'll probably get the plane. I love QQ planes and had one of the 86". It was the best plane I ever flew.

Thanks
Barry

Hi Barry,

You can buy the pipe from Desert Aircraft. It will be quiet. There will be a little modification involved. You will need to install new mounts that you can buy from DA as well but you will need to shave off the previous mounts to get the pipe to pass as it is 10mm larger in diameter than Greve.

I'd say mod will take 5-6 hours of work not hard, lots of sanding.

Hope this helps,
Reza

Hello,
Are the control throws that come in the instructions good? It seems elevator is on the low side. I finished building mine and am ready to maiden. Also the exponential seems very high. Are the numbers good for JR as well as Futaba? Help will be appreciated.

Hey Reza can you post what your throttle setup was exactly on this plane? I remember reading it on a thread on another forum that was deleted. I saw on here that you were running what I would assume on the atv 120 on the up side and 60 on the low side. How long of an arm were you running on the throttle servo and what angle were you setting it at. IE mid carb opening at 90^o on the servo? Thanks!

I watched the video, that awnsers my question if the DA 85 can pull a 35%. The DA 85 performs awesome with that plane.
