Dear All,

I will be starting a new build thread here on RCU on QQAC newest addition. The QQ-Yak 101” Kimball Scheme! This plane is essentially identical to our proven 102” Yak-54 except for few small changes to ensure a good compatibility of this bird with Mighty DA-85. This plane will offer an unbelievable performance in 3D flying regime combined with DA85. It promises to be fast, light, precise and extremely responsive at anything pilot throws at it.

I will do my best to make this a pleasant build thread for those of you that might be interested in following this build. I will answer every question that I receive here on this thread or will find the answer for you. Quique will be here to help me out when in need as well.

I will start this build thread toward end of this week. By that time I should have most everything I need.

At the end of this build thread, you should have all the information pertaining to building and setting up this airplane successfully. I will make some flying videos and provide you with many pictures.

This will not be a weekend build thread rather will go on for sometime. This will be more like a reality T.V build thread as with job and attention that family needs, I won’t be able to dedicate many hours at once but I will make sure to provide a quality build thread.

Most of your questions will be answered in the evenings.

For those of you who own our 102”, I will be able to tell you the difference truthfully at the end of this build thread. I have over 700 flights on (2) 102” QQ-Yak and should be able to tell the real difference of the two in few flights!

I would like to appreciate the participation of interested parties in advance.

Well, I got a call from BaxGlobal that packages have arrived. You need to be home to sign for them. So I decided to go pick them up
QQAC uses Bax Global often, their service is good and they are cheaper than UPS and FedEx. However you need to inspect the boxes for any visible damages before you sign for them. Once you sign, it would be impossible to claim any loss! Well my fuse box had some damages to the extend you could see the cowl as you can see in the picture. I did not sign for the boxes until I opened them all for inspection. Given it was my lunch time and I was in a hurry I asked for some help but the guy wasn't allowed to give me a hand! Anyway, everything was fine but please do make sure if you are buying from us not to sign unless you do not see any damage from the box. Your signature waves the liability!

Now good part. Color scheme is awesome! I know in future I need to have a Kimball Python because the colors are sharp and plenty of space for decals, BTW, they are back in stock!

Mine came with SFG. I thought 101 won't be coming with SFG but I guess it is .

The pilot panel looks great. I Love it!

As always CF tubes and titanium rods and ball links.

And Look at the Tail Gear! WOW! This is a very nice touch on this aircraft! Love it!

The tank tray is done. Unlike 102 that we needed to glue two pieces of 1/8" ply wood!

There are 3 places for your switches! Very nicely done!

This airplane is designed around DA85. I will be building this plane with Slimline Pitts style muffler that can both be purchased from Desert Aircraft. All I have heard and seen from the performance of this engine is all awesome!

Price is same as 102". Plane is the same plane with minor changes to work with DA85.

Is the tunnel in the fuselage long enough for a proper full length tuned pipe, or is it limited to a cannister system only?

It actually won't work with canister due to the diameter of the canister but it can fit a full length greeve pipe which is pretty long.

Alright Gentlemen, everyday we learn something! Today I realized the reason most people do building in winter time is not only because some of them can't fly, mostly because no one can take over 100 degree heat LOL These last two days have been a semi hell in So Cal. Multiply that by 2, would be the forecast of my garage

Anyway, got some work done that I will be going through it next several posts.

I started with wing.
wrinkles had already appeared so I went over them with heat gun and glove. Just make sure that you seal where the colors over lap with iron first and make sure that you do not hold the heat gun too long to shrink the covering and edges!

Go over the covering with glove right after they started stretching and wrinkles disappear and apply a little pressure so you stick the adhesive to balsa and hopefully won't see wrinkle again.

Wing comes with hinges in place but not glued.Take your time on hinging. It is one of the most important step of your build and can make a big difference on your servos and performance of the plane.

I'd like to hinge the wing first. I find it easier to insert the aileron into the wing and lining up the hinges when they are in the wing but you can do it anyway you wish.

1. Mark the place of hinges with a sharpie then remove them.
2. clean the slots with xacto knife.
3. Ensure that hinges go in both aileron and wing with ease in the marked places.
4. Iron down the covering at the bevels and remove excess covering.
5. Apply a little petroleum jelly to the mid point of the hinges. Avoid any grease on the hinge or clean with alcohol swabs.
6. Apply hinge glue to the slots and insert the hinge to push the glue down and at the same time get glue on the hinge. Repeat this step several times until when you insert the hinge, glue oozes out.
7. Wait until glue dries before you insert the counter part in this case aileron.
8. Before you apply glue to the slots and hinges to mate both surfaces, dry fit the aileron and ensure no binding and full deflection. That's the main reason that I would like to wait until glue is set because when taking the aileron out from dry fitting, you can pull a hinge out from wing if the glue is not set!

Each wing comes with 7 hinges but I'd always like to double up the ends. I had some extra hinges laying around and I did cut two slots one at the tip and one at the root and doubled up the ends. You do not have to do this but if you decide to do so, get some Dubro heavy duty hinges.

That exacto knife box you see in above pictures, I picked up from Costco for $20 or $25. I figured it was well worth it. It also has some good variety of blades.

While the glue on hinges on the wing was drying, I attacked the fuse. I used an 1/8 drill and drilled holes inside the line marked for the carb of DA85. Then I got my dremel wheel and kinda connected these bunch of bullet holes and removed the block.

You can use dremel drum sander to smoothen. Also remember you can use your drill bit and drill to kinda connect these holes together.

This was fun.

Now mating the surfaces on the wing.

I applied glue to the slots and hinges. I did push the glue down the slots a couple of time and reapplied glue to the slots. On the hinges I applied a thin surface of glue.

Inserted the aileron into the wing and cleaned the excess glue that oozed out. Then a little masking tape to hold the surface in center.

P.S. Remember those Sharpie marks for the location of the hinges, make sure to wipe them off when you are cleaning the excess glue with alcohol swabs or they will stay there forever as you can get a little surface of glue over the markings!

Anti-rotation pins on the 101 are excellent. Best I have seen on QQ-Yak planes!
Section of the pin that goes through the ribs are coarse! They are also longer than previous runs!

Front pins are longer than rear pins.

Front pin from wing root to the center of the hole should measure 10.5mm. This is very important that you make correct measurements. I won't worry if you did 11mm but if you do less that can become a problem!

Rear pin should measure 8mm from the wing root to the center of the hole.

Here's what I did.

I measured this with precision ruler on my desk and marked it so when I apply epoxy to the holes and insert the pin, I won't have to worry about making measurement while epoxy is setting. I use 5 minute epoxy so I need to be fast on this as it set in 2 minutes if you work in a garage at 120 degree LOL

Anyway, apply a little epoxy to the root hole just a layer. Apply more epoxy to the hole on the second rib. Actually fill up the hole with epoxy! Insert the pin so the hole is vertical just like the pictures.

Then mix some micro balloon epoxy and make fillet around the hole on the second rib.

After all that is completely set you can hit it with some thin CA but I won't worry about it if you didn't. Just make sure that you DO NOT apply CA to epoxied area while epoxy is still setting! They don't get along very well!

Tell QQ, that for 1000 dollars, the firewall hole should be lazer cut at the factory. Anti-rotation pins should be installed as well. Other than that,m things look nice so far.

Problem is even though we recommend DA-85 and test flew it with that engine, people out there have variety of engines that may be wanting to use. We actually have first hand experience on this. Python came already drilled and blind nuts installed for DA100 and 3W106 but many complained that they had to pop the t-nuts and plug the holes because it didn't fit their engine of choice. It's hard to satisfy everyone as all of us have set up our planes differently.

On the anti-rotation pins, it only took me 10 minutes to install them and I know I have enough glue where it should be. Although you have a point!

Opening up the servo bays. Since there are multiple lightening holes in the wing, make sure to pay attention and actually open up the servo bay. Leave a little coting so you can iron down the edges.

Control horn holes. Best way to open those up is with a soldering iron, it cleanly opens the holes and seals the covering. To find the hole, use your finger nail or a flash light!

Go over the servo tray with thin CA. I have seen that sometimes they have gotten a little loose, so instead of doing this in future, do it now and not worry about it

OK Let's continue.

Installing the studs for control horn. For this you need to cut the head of the 2" 8-32 Dubro bolts. I used a 12" 8-32 threaded rod that I picked up from Home Depot. The outboard hole needs the 2 3/4" length of the threaded rod so you will have about 1 1/2" protruding from the surface. Inboard, needs to be 2" so only 1 1/8 protrudes off the surface. I used 30 minute epoxy for extra strength needed here but 5 min will do too.

Make sure that epoxy doesn't protrude from the other side(top) of the aileron.

Then I installed the servos and marked the center holes for screws. I used an 1/8" bit and did the pilot hole then hit a with thin CA for strength.

The outboard needs a 24" extension and inboard 3". Servos drop in the bays with ease but for the first time I had to shave a little off a bay for the outboard servo to fit. I am sure most of you won't have this problem as this is the first time I actually had to do this but in case you run into this, now you know what to do.

I use dental floss to secure the connectors and tie a couple of knots plus a round of masking tape over the knot.

I also used a 36" rod and passed it through the ribs with a little masking tape attached to the end of it. Grabbed the masking tape and taped the servo lead to it and pulled it through.
