Got the elevators done except for programing and servo arm.

Hinging pretty much like the wings and you need to CA the tray and the TABS. I always like to apply a little thin CA to tabs connection and stab.

This time I used my soldering iron to open the bays but be very careful because as you dragging it to open the bay, it can slip and hit an unwanted area which would result in an unnecessary covering repair. So be careful!

Also the bolt length from the surface of elevator should be 1".
Coat inside the hole with epoxy and do over do it because it can pile up the other side of the elevator. If so, poke some small holes into covering on the other side and let the epoxy exit.

I used 36" servo extension. Servo output shaft should be closer to the hinge line!

Some pics for now.

Epoxy the anti-rotation pins and leave about 1/4" to 5/16" sticking out. I used 5 minute epoxy and then added a little micro balloons as well.

Fuse prep work. Mostly done by soldering iron. Be very careful if you decided to do it that way. One slip equals to one hole in the covering. I opened all the holes and wing opening except for the rudder. I will show rudder later

I got the cowl mounting brackets done. For now I will post some pictures and then will go into details in the next posts. These pictures are mostly showing the laser cut parts and how they should go together. Stay tuned

Back to the cowl mounting system.

First I laid out the components just to see what goes where. There was an error in manual saying glue X to Y! if you followed the naming you would end up gluing the wrong parts, so please before gluing anything, make sure you just dry fit it.

I did the blind nuts before gluing the horizontal piece. I just pushed the blind nuts by hand, later I added some CA to the teeth. I did not use epoxy for assembly of the circular pieces, I scratched them with exacto knife and run a 4-40 bolt through them (BTW, I changed the metric hardware to standard, this way if I loose a screw, I don't have to special order them) to center it and have control to pull the doughnut to the wood. Meaning adding pressure for it to stick really well. Weight of the screw itself holds the doughnut piece in place.

I did epoxy the rest as pictured. Anywhere that has been laser cut there is a layer of burnt wood, I'd like to scrape that for better bonding!

Let's get the rudder done. (removable set up not in the manual)

First remove the pins from the hinges by either straightening one side of the pin and pulling the pins from the other side or just cutting one side of the pin and pulling it out.

Size of the pins are 0.9mm. I found the K&S 497 piano wires at 1 mm from local hobby shop. That's what I used for replacing the stock pins and it did go in with ease.

Pass the piano wire through the hinges and place them in the rudder for proper spacing. Glue the hinges in the rudder using the hinge glue.

Now hinge the rudder to the fuse. I applied glue to both hinges and the fuse. Wipe off excess glue and hold the rudder center using masking tape until glue is set.

I have about 4" of rod sticking out the bottom that I will bend and clamp to the bottom of the rudder.

Open up the rudder cable slot on the fuse. Note there are two slots right on top of each other. You need to open the one in the picture which would be at the same height of the rudder control horn hole! The slot on top of this is just a lightening hole. See the picture and you will the lightening hole.

Pictures of rudder installation. Make sure the bolt going through the rudder is centered. Measurement shown is accurate!

Use locktite over all threaded bolts and nuts.
Use a clamp to hold the CF arm to the servo arm and try to center the provide CF arm over another arm. You can eye ball this pretty much and mark the holes need to be drilled on the CF arm to the servo arm.

Rest is really easy to do Cables do CROSS over. Again make sure that you open the correct slot on the fuse for rudder exit!

I did center the servo and mounted the servo arm in correct position.

Just a suggestion, on my Composite ARF I positioned the rudder hinge wire towards the fus and clamped it under the tail wheel, makes a nice neat installation.

Rezagh - Did you at any time consider 2 servos for the rudder? I guess it depends on the type of flying, IMAC vs 3D.

I am currently building a 35% Sukhoi with a DA85 and although I was told a single rudder servo will be fine I was also told a 2 servo (8711s) on a tray system would be better.

Any thoughts on 1 vs 2 servos?

BTW your Yak is one very sweet looking plane!

I have had 2 rudder servos for over 400 flights, when I changes to one 8711, I could hardly tell the difference except in extreme speed, I could feel two rudder servo had a slight edge. I won't do two rudder servos on any 35%. 1 8711, simplicity and weight saving plus more than enough power for any IMAC/3D style flying. Like I mentioned the difference is really small. You also have to consider the fact that two rudder servo can slightly fight each other in travel.

Rezagh, I just received the new Gen4 102 Yak54, and seeing that it uses the older manual, I think that it should be noted that your build thread might be very helpful except for the engine install, on this kit as well. The new cowl mounting, and new tail wheel, are examples. I really like QQ's new colors for the 101, and Gen4 102, along with foam free tech. that he added. Keep up the great pics.

Thanks Rick

Hi Rick,

Did you say the cowl mounting on the new 102 G4 is the same as 101? If so, I didn't know that was changed.

Thanks very much for the kind words.

Reza

Thanks Reza

Might return that SWB tray and go to one servo and save on the weight since the plane will already be tail heavy due to a 85 instead of a 100 going in the nose. And if you have had 400+ flights with 2 and could hardly tell the difference then a basic IMAC flyer like me wont tell either!
