I don't know if that problem way back ago with the guy having the really bad vibration still has a problem but here is a thought, if he was using a back plate for a spinner and he tightened the prop to much, that can "wow" out the spinner plate and cause lots of vibration it took me a little while to realize that my self.

I guess that was me. I still have some vibration, but that is without spinner plate. The prop is firely balanced.

But the problem can be that i tightened the prop to mush, does this alsow need to "wow" out?

-> MLD 28 required slighly fast prop flips for drawing fuel to the carb .... unlike my 3W and DL, where I rotate the prop to the compression point and then flip the prop, for MLD stop at 30~35 degrees before the compression and then flip the prop complete 180 degrees. This ensures slighly faster flip. Yesterday I managed to prime the cold engine with 5 flips only :-) (With choke of course)

Solder over the hole in the choke plate and fuel draw under choke will be a lot better.

2. Ignition battery pack: I often forget (age factor) that people use LiPo, A123 and LiMn... We recommend using battery packs ranging from 4.8V to 8.0V. So 4, 5, 6 cell NiCD and NiMH will be fine. 2s A123, LiPo and LiMn are also fine.

Although the module states operating voltage higher than 6v, based on my two modules failing after about same hours on it (3-4 or so) on 2s LiPo direct, I suggest sticking to 5cell nicad/nimh max or 2s LiFe or 2s LiPo with regulator.

kenhiraihnl -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (5/28/2009 2:00 AM)

thanks for your recommendation...i haven't fired-up my mld-28 yet, but looks like i'll continue to regulate my voltage from 2slipo/2sa123 to 5v...no problem, i've been using good quality regulators (kool/hyperion), and so far, have not experienced any more ei problems...imho, the cc 10a bec is a little flimsy for gas use, unless it's packed in foam, and the wires are secured...ken

i also do the same. i have some background in electronics and a circuit board usually does not like to see more than 5v through all resistors transistor etc. it usually builds up to much heat and shortens it's life. unless it has a built in reg. the coil usually doesn't care. i will stay with a 4.8v pack or use a reg to keep the voltage down.

I have been using Shell Advance S2 (2 cycle mineral oil) with unleaded petrol at 30:1 ratio for break in. My questions are

Is it recommended to use hi-Octain petrol with this engine?
As 2 cycle fully synthetic engine oils are not available locally. How lean can I go with this mineral based oil for mixing with petrol? Is it recommended to go as high as 50:1 with this oil?

Regards

/Dard

jamesrxx951 -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (5/28/2009 6:27 PM)

just mix according to the oil manufactors recomendations. you can't hurt it if it is a little oil rich, better that lean. and just regular unleded fuel. in the states it would be 87-89 octane. the only time you would consider higher octane is if you raised the compression or put a tuned pipe on it.

stevenchao -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (5/30/2009 4:29 AM)

People were asking us about how we recommend starting. So we put together a quick vid of how we start the MLD-28S engine at our shop. It follows the manually in a fairly abbreviated fashion. We did not use anything special, but we did choose to use a more dangerous (harder) prop such as a Mejzlik. We wanted to show that with care, we can minimize much danger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuXFJxsbhaY&fmt=18

Prop: Mejzlik 18 x 6
Ignition: Factory issued CDI
Muffler: Side mount (we mounted upside down to reduce exhaust)
Oil: AMSOIL, Sabre Professional (2 cycle synthetic) mixed at 100-1
Gasoline: 87 octane

Hey ... thanks for the video ...

96td -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/2/2009 10:26 AM)

one gallon through my mld 28 now. 94 octane gas with motul 800 2t at 40 to 1. (100 ft above sea level)
pulling a 79 inch 11 lb decathlon around with an apc 18x8.
absolute flawless performance, has not missed a beat.
vertical is superb with that prop on that airframe.
very highly recommend this engine for any 90-120 size airframe.......

super_nova -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/5/2009 11:50 PM)

Did anyone ever figure out a good way to quiet down this engine? I haven't finished reading through all the pages yet on this thread, so sorry if a solution was posted and I missed it. I'm looking to get into gas engines and I'm thinking about going with a plane from Peak Models and the MLD28. I want it to begin flying IMAC with and I know many fields in Canada have pretty strict noise regulations....

Also, Is there a service location for these engines in Canada? Seems like Cermark seems to be handling the service in the States. Would just be nice if there was someplace my side of the border that will service the engine if needed.

Thanks,
Jason

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 12:10 AM)

From what I'm reading in this thread, the pitts muffler is the best way to quiet the engine. The steel wool seems to be pain at best. I have ran mine with the side muffler and the pitts style. The difference in noise level is huge.

Lazer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 6:38 AM)

That's what I've read also, but that the Pitts will also pull down around 200 to 300 rpms. May be able to help if you decide on (the most of the time back ordered) MLD 28cc engine.

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 6:46 AM)

With a Vess 18x6, I only lost 90 RPM going to the pitts style.

super_nova -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 6:47 AM)

Where are you getting the pitts muffler from?

super_nova -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 7:51 AM)

Thanks Jimeni.

Is the MLD28S from Cermark, the same engine being sold by Peak Model in their combos such as here:  http://www.peakmodel.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_99_96&products_id=647

I want to get one of those plane/engine combos to save on costs. I just want to make sure I'm also getting one of the most updated engines (if there are any differences).

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 8:04 AM)

I dont know if the engines are the same or not. Steven will have to answer that one.

jamesrxx951 -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 5:23 PM)

http://www.jtecrc.com/snufflermufflers.htm   this may be another option. i have never heard them but they sound like they might work. also prop choice can make a difference in noise. but i havnt compaired enough 18" props to see if they are large enough to make considerable noise.

brewski -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 5:40 PM)

I got the MLD in yesterday and mounted in on my Showtime.  Fit is pretty good.  I ran it this morning and am well pleased.  Choked, rocked the prop back and forth a few times to get the fuel to the carb,  turned on the ignition,  flipped a few more times until it popped,  choke off and fired up in about 5 flips.  After very little tuning it is running great.  I'll get some #'s tomorrow.

The only dissappointment was that the total weight of the engine came in 3-4 ozs heavier that advertised.  On a good note though,  the AUW of the plane came in 4 ozs. lighter with the gas compared to the OS 120 AX setup.  On the 120 AX I had a perry pump and the 14 oz fuel tank that was a little extra weight for glow setup.  On the gas setup I am using a 6 oz tank.  The fuel tank with glow tubing weighted 4.5 oz..  The fuel tank for gas, tank and tygon came in at 2 ozs.  I am using my receiver battery on my ignition.  It is a A123 1100 mAh that I will check the charge after the first 2 flights to get a feel for battery consumption.

So far,  keeping in mind I have only run it on the ground,  I am very happy with my new engine.

CAT POwer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/6/2009 8:22 PM)

Brewski, I believe they don't count the stand off's and mountig bolts as part of the engine.
You also want to us a Air funnel as this on one     """   http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ZEN848ES08300    """

jamesrxx951 -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/7/2009 1:13 AM)

i think you will end up with a 18/6 prop on there instead of that 17/6 it will help keep the rpms down and it has more than enough power with the 18" prop and really fast spool up. also you don't need that velocity stack i have never used mine and if properly tuned it runs awsome. no fuel spitting at all. hopefully that carb will sit ok in the cowl so you don't have to cut it up any. it should be a blast on that showtime good flying airplanes. oh take a look at reinforcing you landind gear plate. i dont know if they have made them any stronger but they are the weak link of that airplane

brewski -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/7/2009 1:37 AM)

I hear you on the landing gear. I have already had to deal with that problem.  I have about 15 flights on it with the 120 AX and it is fun.  As for the cowl,  it is already cut up for the 120 so I'll probably get a new one for the MLD.  The carb will actually fit in the cowl without cutting but would only have 3/8" to breath so I will have to cut an opening.  I was thinking that the velocity stack, if needed,  would be a nice finishing touch through the cowl opening.

The prop will definitly be changed to a 18x6 as soon as I get to the LHS.  I am only running this one because I already had it.  With that said,  I had a RCGF 26 and a friend also still has one and it was best on the Xoar 17x6.  His is on a Funtana, ~9.5 lbs.  The Showtime is now 9.2 lbs.

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/7/2009 3:30 AM)

3/8" is plenty. No hole at all would look best, in my opinion.

leepord geko -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (6/7/2009 6:09 AM)

So I have switched over to amzoil at 50:1 and got a tach today at 8300+ on a 17x8apc, I am just drilling out the 17x10 mejlik for tomorrow and will try it out, I expect it will be 7800 probably. This is with the pitts muffler also. I don't have a 18x6 prop to try well actually I do but its a peice of crap really its a zinger but its not even the pro zinger type so it still has the square ends, and is very inefficent, also the plane does not have enough ground clearence for a 18" prop.
