I've crammed the plug cap on and it's past the hex.... I spent a bit of time replacing the all-thread thottle link with CF rod, rerouted the ignition/power line farthest away from all other leads.. it cleaned up all the jitters on the ailerons but there's still a bit of wiggle on the elevator servos.... These have very long runs from the receiver to the tail! I ordered some ferrite rings to loop the long servo leads around... I read tonight the long run to the back of the tail is bad news for picking up RF interference... lets see what shakes out... no pun intended!

Put a zip tie tightly around the base of the plug cap. It will stop. Any movement of the cap can cause this, seen it happen on several engines. Also note that Cermark is the only authorized distributor of the US version of this engine. So if these places are not getting them from Cermark, they are likely Chinese versions. And yes there is a difference.

AA5BY -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (12/30/2011 2:58 AM)

Carbon fiber rod conducts about as good as does the metal rod. If that is the culprit... go plastic.

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (12/30/2011 3:09 AM)

thanks for the quick input AA5BY. aaargh.,,, and here I thought the CF rod was better then the metal all-thread... I'll have to order one of der dubro kits.

Flyracer,

I use several long leads no problems. Poor or bad connections show problems. I would also agree with Jimeni. Use a hose clamp on the spark plug. Be patient. The problem will show it's self. If you use plastic arms on the carby and servo, you should be good to go.

Good luck,

Howdy

New here but I have a Peak Model (V1?) 25% Yak with a SPE26 and a SY 16x8 3 blade.  It does okay but I would like more power and the MLD28 seems like the answer.  I've read a little over half of this thread but I've yet to see any performance data with 3 blade props.  Has anyone tried it?

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 1:09 AM)

good  questiion! i have wondered about runninng a 3-blade prop as well. i dont see anyone doing any serious 3d  flying using a 3-blade setup. typically its larger diameter and slightly less twist.. ie 19x6.

on a positive note my extra260/mld28 setup is ready to maiden! no more servo jitters and she starts n' runnings consistently across a  dozen attempts over the weekend!

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 1:31 AM)

I tried a 3 blade once for 3d. I couldn't get that prop off the engine fast enough. I have an spe 26, and have found that a wood 18x6 is optimal for that engine. Vess is the only way to go. IMO. Light, spools fast, does not cavitate in a hover, and they look great.

prototype3a -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 3:59 AM)

LOL!  Jimeni, you're such a broken record about that Vess 18x6.   I'm sure it's a great prop for 3d on the MLD28 but I need a smaller prop for ground clearance on landings and takeoffs.  So, a 3 blade makes more sense for me.

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 4:47 AM)

Yes I am. But there is reason, just trying to share. I used the 18x6 on my AW 120 yak, had plenty of clearance. A 17x6 would be good too.
Here is a chart for 2 to 3 blades. http://www.zingerpropeller.com/_2_blade_.htm
If you go with the mld 28, you won't regret it. Its much nicer than the spe 26. Good luck with what you decide on.

prototype3a -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 5:05 AM)

I don't know if it is just my Peak Model Yak or not but it seems like it has almost no ground clearance with the 16x8 3 blade on it now.  It might also just be the fact that our grass field isn't exactly flat since I live in the mountains.  It has taken me about a year to get comfortable flying at my field.  Also keep in mind that this is my first "giant scale" plane.  I have ~7 years of heli experience but only maybe a year on airplanes.  I may put a Vess 2 blade on it eventually but I need more practice taking off and landing with it at our field before I'll put a bigger and more expensive prop on it.

Looks like that chart basically says to drop the diameter by 2 inches to switch to a 3 blade.  That would mean that I should get around 8200rpm or so with my 3 blade which would be really nice.

That said, it is a fun "little" plane for me so far.  I almost ordered a MLD28 from milehighrc ($220 shipped) but then I read here that they may not have the latest official NA version.  Does Cermark ever offer free shipping or discount codes?  $220 shipped seems like a pretty good deal.

It would be interesting to order the V4 landing gear and see if I could bolt them onto my older version.  I'm pretty sure the newer ones are taller....  and lighter.

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 2:49 PM)

Proto

I'm running an MLD28 on my PeakModel Yak54.... with an 18x8 prop. This was my 1st MLD engine and I purchased it from Mike over at MileHighRC. The mount point, carb and engine casing are all different than the MLD engine I recently got from TexasRCPlanes.

I added a bit of bend to the landing gear to get a bit more ground clearance [:D]

rexbirk -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/2/2012 9:51 PM)

I have two from Mile High RC. They have been fine other than Spark Plug Boot Issues. Once I changed the boots and spray the inside with spray silicone so they don't stick they have been running flawlessly. Mike's service at Mile High RC has been stellar. He always answers emails and is very helpful. Parts have been easy to get also.

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/3/2012 7:42 PM)

Rex or Jimeni

Any idea how to tell what the generation/version engine is? A couple of things I like about the version I got from MileHighRC... the bolt pattern for the firewall is lot tigher... the standoffs were able to fit inside the DLE30  bolt holes I already had on the Yak54 and I didn't have to do much to prep the firewall.

I'm still doing some mid-range tuning on the TexasRCPlanes (TRP) engine... once it's completely setup, I'll measure thrust on both setups. I am leaning towards the TRP engine as having more top end thrust based on what I feel while holding the airframe and running through the throttle range.

prototype3a -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/3/2012 7:53 PM)

Bolt patterns differ between the versions of this engine?!    uughh.   One reason I liked the MLD28 was that the bolt pattern was allegedly the same as my SPE 26.  I figured that I would be able to do a quick and easy engine swap since they would both use the same muffler and carbs are in about the same location.

rexbirk -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/3/2012 8:16 PM)

Don't know which is which.I have had my 3 Cermark engines for years. Just got my Mile High ones last year. They all run fine once the ignition issues are attended to. The Mile High ones are about 12 mm longer from mounting lug to mounting lug.

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/3/2012 8:29 PM)

I'll try and post a pic of the two bolt pattern templates.....

Rex... I probably need to do some work on the plug cap on my MHR MLD28 engine! I think I mentioned that there are times it kicks back when I flip start her.... I ordered some plug cap kits from ValleyViewRC... just need to do the work.

rexbirk -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/3/2012 10:52 PM)

That's what I did. It fixed the problem. Take one of the old plug boots apart. Pry the tabs open and have a look. On all of mine there was a small tear on the inside 90 from the plug to the wire. It was discolored where the tear was. When I stretched the silicone I could see the tear clearly. About 1/8 inch long. It was allowing the spark to jump to the metal boot shroud. I noticed the RCExcel silicone is much firmer that the original. I still lube the plug and boot with spray silicone to make it easier to remove the boot.

I had problems for two seasons until I discovered the boot problem by accident. I was checking for spark after I had a non running engine in my workshop. I turned the engine over to check for spark and I heard the snap but saw no spark. I put my ear near the boot with and could clearly hear the spark. Thats when I took one apart to see what was up. I was having the kickback scenario also.

After changing the boots mine all run like a champ. It is my belief that most of the complaints about the MLD Ignition units are boot related.

I am delighted with these engines. I was running YS Glo 4 strokes before (I still love them) but the fuel cost in a season would buy me several MLD-28 Engines!

As far as which version is newer, I would think the 3 bearing version would be the newer one but again I am not totally sure. Both versions run very well.

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/4/2012 12:20 AM)

My mld 28 mount pattern is the same as the spe 26. I got mine from cermark. I know that chief aircraft sells cermarks, so they may be getting others to do so as well. I think the only different versions are really just north American and Chinese, not sure though. I know the big change they made early on was the ignition, maybe that's considered a newer version. The spe ignition will work on the 28 also. The mld 35 is a totally different animal altogether.

rexbirk -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/4/2012 12:54 AM)

The version from Mile High has three bearings and the standoffs mount to the back of the lugs that hold the crankcase halves together. The lugs are threaded on the back side. The mounting pattern has a smaller footprint. The carb is different as well. Looking at the two engines you notice that the nose of the crankcase where the prop hub is located is slightly longer. Probably because of the extra bearing? Looks like the cylinder is identical. They seem to produce the same amount of power.

rexbirk -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/4/2012 12:56 AM)

Jimeni,

Have you run the 35 yet? From what I see it is substantially heavier? And more powerful.

Jimeni -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/4/2012 1:42 AM)

No, have not ran the 35 yet. Alex at cermark tells me it will turn the same prop as my spe 43, at about the same rpm. I have not put it in my 78" edge yet. I may not. It weighs a pound less than the 43, and I already have all three of my lipo's forward of the fuel tank to balance. I will only add weight that comes with more horsepower, or more capacity, mah. No lead. If I could get it to balance, it would be a giant foamie, lol.

flyracer -> RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine (1/4/2012 8:09 PM)

let's see if this works... i'm attaching a pic of the two mount templates. the little one on top is for the MileHighRC engine and the bottom one is the template for the engine I got from TexasRCPlanes.

Did a little more tuning on the Extra260/MLD28 setup late yesterday afternoon.... she's ready for that 1st flight! She's tipping the scales at 10.5 lbs AUW with a full tank of gas.... I think she's gonna be ballastic on the vertical with the MLD28 engine.
