Just bought this "vintage"3-channel kit from Kyosho, the Sky Master 10. The wings are ABS filled with foam, which should prove to be strong for a trainer, and the fuse is also ABS.
Included in the combo is a brand new OS 10LA (vintage kit, new engine). The price diference with and without engine was only €15. Considering that an OS 10LA costs around €65 my ways, it's a good deal - a new engine for me to play with
What was I thinking? Dieselise the airplane with my PAW 0.09RC! What's better than going to the field, fill the tank up, flip the rx battery switch and flip the prop? No glow driver to go dead and the sweet aroma of diesel fuel in the air

That's a cute parasol monoplane. Never seen that before. It reminds me of the old Airtronics Q-tee and is just the kind of plane I'd look for in a kit. With a 42" span and 300 square inches of wing area I think you'll find your PAW .09 will have more than adequate performance with an 8x4 propeller. Please post pictures when you finish.

Silly question, but will the diesel fuel play nicely with the ABS?

cool plane.

I don't want to discourage the use of a diesel in anything, however, the ether in the diesel fuel is a rather agressive solvent with respect to plastics (and foam). Some of the vintage combat rules forbid the use of foam wings when using diesel engines for that reason (also it is not very vintage).

Go ahead if you must but be aware that you may find the ether slowly eating the ABS skin or attacking the foam underneath the abs skin.

I pass this on only as info. I have never used a diesel engine in a plane with any foam or abs plastic parts but I have destroyed a couple of plastic graduated cylinders first by using one to measure ether directly and the second thinking that there was not enough ether in the fuel that it would happen again but it did.

cheers, Graham

Hmm did not notice foam wings all my arfs even the electric are built ups. I think the cowl on my VMAR cub may have been ABS it was not fibreglass some sort of thin cheap plastric

extrusion it was not effected by diesel or oil. Any foam would need some sort of barrier finish followed by a top coat of a fuel proof spray such as one made by cover right. If it resists gasoline it will be ok with diesel. This might be answered on the 1/2A forum martin.

Are you running your Lightning Bug with a diesel Martin?

I have an outrunner (gasp!) in mine. I would have thought something like a PAW 80 (.049) would pull it round very well.

As an aside: man, do I love diesels! Easy starting and no glow plugs.

The little 10LA has had 4 runs since yesterday on FAI fuel. Peaks for some minutes at 12400rpm, but spits fuel from the carb like there's no tomorrow. It seems it spits more fuel out than in
Lower it to a high 5000rpm idle and go back to WOT; yeah right, stabilises 2000rpm lower than before, heats up and quits. My arm and finger (prop bitten for 4 times) hurt.
This LA is going to the shelf, as it's beautiful with the blue colour. My ASP 12A is going to the Sky Master (2nd flick starter).

BUT! What if I carefully paint the wings and fuselage inside and outside with thinned epoxy? Could I use my PAW then?
