I think the OS .46AX is probably the best (common) engine on the market in this size range. You pay about a $40-50 premium for them vs. some of the others (ST, TT, Magnum) but they have a great reputation for reliability. The less expensive engines can be great too, but may require a little more patience and set-up. If you like to tinker, they can be great. If you want something to run out of the box, then I'd go for the OS.

Good luck.

Edit - I probably shouldn't have included TT in the list above - they are closer in price to the OS. The GMS engines would also fall in the lower price range.

OS engines are excellent, but my friend abd I have been going with the Thunder Tiger 46 Pro (we each have several of them). There power and reliability is equal to the OS, and they run right out of the box. Highly recommended. Actually, the TT engines are the best engines I have ever owned, and over many, many years have had lots of different engines. I also own a Tigre 45 which is a powerful engine, but did take more fooling with to get everything running right. It is, how ever, a real bargain, and not that tough to get adjusted. For very mild engines with less power, the OS LA engines are actually very good despite the bad mouthing they receive on these forums. Good luck with your Super Sportster.

I APPRECIATE IT GUYS. I WAS JUST CURIOUS. IN MY AIRPLANE SHOP I HAVE TONS OF ENGINES BUT I AM JUST RECENTLY GETTING BACK INTO THIS GREAT HOBBY AND I WAS ALMOST SURE WHILE I WAS OUT THEY HAD MANY UPGRADES. I ALSO AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY NEW DX7 SPEKTRUM RADIO SYSTEM. TECHNOLOGY IS AMAZING!

THANKS AGAIN,

While it's not a .40 but generally a .46 will fit just as well.............. An Evolution .46 is probably the most powerful motor of that size I've been exposed to. They is MEAN! ....and pretty too!

I've benched OS, ST and Evo .46's (45's), and I can't agree with that statement about the evo's power. The OS and ST both turned an 11x6 in the high 12K, low 13K range, while the EVO struggled to break 12K. I find the evo low end needle excessively sensitive too. OS/TT if the budget allows, for easy adjustability, and ST if on the cheap. Like stated above, the ST is slightly more tricky to tune, but still pretty easy. The OS/TT engines are top notch in all regards, including price....

If you really want a hot .40 class engine, look at Nelson and Jett or the other racing engines. Here, tho, you pay 3-4x the sport engine cost, but a .40 turning 20K+ makes muchos nice noise!

If you're looking for the "hottest" sport motor, look no further than Jett Engineering. Hotter still are the dedicated racing .40s by various manufacturers.

Also, don't forget the YS .45. It is a superb motor and very powerful. They have been discontinued, but they can be found NIB from time to time on the big auction site that everyone knows about.

I HAVE AN EVOLUTION .40 IN THE CABINET THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME; I'VE NEVER RAN IT. THE REASON I'M NOT PUTTING IT ON THE HOTS IS BECAUSE ITS SIZE. IT IS MUCH LARGER THAN A REGULAR .40. THE ENGINE THAT WAS ORIGINALLY ON THE HOTS WAS AN ENYA .40. A VERY RELIABLE/HOT RUNNING ENGINE. I WOULD PUT THAT ENGINE BACK ON THE PLANE BUT THE GAS SPOUT THAT LEADS TO THE CARBURATOR IS BROKEN AND I WOULD REALLY JUST LIKE TO PUT A BRAND NEW ENGINE ON IT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO FIND OLD PARTS FOR THE ENYA.

I'm with you on the .55ax, the Jetts are really hot but just cost too much for a sport engine.
Next hot Evo I see will be the first one but still A nice sport engine, just way down on the bottom of my list and way down on power compared to the other engines mentioned.
I have the 60 size Hots myself with the YS 1.10 stuffed up front. Love the plane, it was built for those really windy days we get here but turned into A favorite flyer no mater what the conditions are. The plane just loves to be over powered and that .55ax is just A very nice engine and user friendly.

The .46-AX is probably the best all round option with a good balance of performance, reliability and ease of use. Yes there are more powerful engines and less expensive engines but nothing comes as close to having it all as the .46-AX. Prop it right and remove the baffle from the muffler and the thing will absolutely scream. I had one on a Super Sportster ARF that was so fast people thought I'd put a .60 on it. The .55-AX is another option. Same mounting dimensions as the .46 but with more torque and pulls a larger/more aggressive prop. It is just as reliable as the .46 to boot.

I have both a jett 50 and an os55 nothign compares to the jett (to be fair id be p*ssed if it wasnt a power house for the price) i dont suggest it for a new flier there harder to tune you ahve to mess with specail fuel tanks

the 55ax is the way to go in my mind...

Yes, buy the OS 55AX you will absolutely love it. Its one of the best(if not the very best) running engines on the market with one of the best power bands.

I agree with the previous poster that the Thunder Tiger .46 is a great little engine. I have one that's been through 5 planes & still runs like new.

Also, Jett Engineering is the absolute HOTTEST reliable engine made. I have no experience with Nelson but they seem to be very similar. The Jett .76 is actually in a .40 size engine casing & weighs less than the OS 46ax (but also costs @ $400)
