Hello again everyone. I have my completed and customized 16 pound, 1.60 powered KMP Sea Fury nearly ready for its maiden flight. I do have a few questions for you guys. In order to get a cleaner final appearance, I did not use the control horn plates (the flat plastic piece that would be on the top of the surfaces that accepts the two long fine threaded screws). Instead, I used two allen headed wood screws that are 3/4 of an inch long to secure each horn. All of the surfaces have solid wood blocks into which the screws are anchored. I thin CA'ed the holes and the screws tighten very snuggly with no strippage. The wood seems to be hard balsa. I have pulled on them with generous force and they do not budge. Do you think that this setup is safe to fly? Or is reinforcing needed? Anyone have success like this? Thank you!

It would be shame to lose a beautiful plane because of something so trivial. You can't duplicate the conditions the control horn will see just by pulling on it or the screws holding it. What about the vibration it sees?

You are right....maybe just needed someone else to say that. I am in the process of putting them on now....I will just hit them with some paint to hide them a bit. Thank you.

If the wood blocks you mention are hardwood (not just hard balsa) and are well attached to the frame of the control surface, you should be okay. Did you fiberglass the surfaces? That would help prevent tear-out.

I do this on my scale models (omit the back plate) but I build in a hardwood plate, screw the horn down to the plate and skin the surface around it, which hides the front plate, all you see is the arm of the horn.
